Could we get a basic/simple guide to installing Mods?

Hoping for help and a sticky!

I did 4 searches on how exactly to install mods and got nothing of value. While I understand this board is more directed at making and distributing mods I think maybe a sticky for all of us noobs would be nice.

So where do I install the Mod I downloaded?

Do I need to back up anything?

How do I uninstall this Mod?

Can I have multiple Mods installed?

Can I use Mods in multiplayer?

Will this mod turn my computer into something resembling skynet and take over the world?

I was hoping to get a sticky for all the noobs, myself included!

Put the mods folder into C:\Documents and Settings\
+1 Loading…

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods\

between the two slashes is the name of your useraccount name e.g. Administrator

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods\DARI

this makes a mod visible in the options/mod menu that you can enable

I've updated the game to 02 and still can't find any folder in the game that says "mods". I get "App Data", but no subfolders within it.

I'm assuming i have a "show hidden files" switch somewhere that needs to be turned on. I'm an XP user. Does anyone know where to turn this switch on?

Thanks

Yes.

Tools--->Folder Options---->View

Now down in advanced settings looks for "Hidden files and folders".

Select Show hidden files and folders then click apply.

So to actually see the Mod and enable it you have to put it under the Admin? Wow that is very useful information. I was wondering why it didn't show up.

Could we please sticky this!

Heh I misunderstood that but yea I got it working just fine. I really think all this information should be compiled and made into a sticky for all of noob kind to see!

you should consider also describing how to install mods on Vista

thats quit easy - use a quick'n'dirty ol'fdisk, install XP , install the game, see my old post and voila mods on (ex-) vista installation

maybe ask the official "Games for Windows" Representative that was responsible for this most weird folder structure in computing history...

Ok, so I am running Vista on my pc.  I download the mod from say file front, for example the mod "7 deadly sins".  Then I us Winrar and extrat it into my mod folder: "c:\user\admin\local settings\application data\Ironclad games\Sins of a Solar Empire\mods".  I then start the game, go to options and go to the mods tab, but there is nothing that appears.  Anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong, or why the mod is not appearing when I start up the game and go to the options\mod tab?  This is really troubling me and there are some great mods out there, so I want to figure this out.  -Thanks

ah... this thread is a good place to post a question I posted elsewhere.

When creating mods (ie putting all the files together into the relevant 'mods' folder) do you need to include all the gameinfo files? or only those you changed?
Will Sins load all the .entity files, etc from the mods folder, then proceed to load any it doesn't find from its original location?

I'd suggest making sure you are patched up to the latest version. You need to be at least 1.01 to use mods (I think. :D). I remember not being able to use mods on vanilla Sins of a Solar Empire; you will need to patch it through Impulse first. If there is a place you can get it outside of Impulse, I don't know where it is. Just 'Update' SOASE inside of Impulse to be sure.

The problem could also be that the mod you are trying to load doesn't match up with the version of SOASE you are currently running. As soon as 1.1 hit, my mod happened to crash my version of sins. Is that '7 Deadly Sins' mod compatible with 1.1?

It's weird how it works. Some folders need all of the files, and some only need the ones you change. GameInfo and Window require all of the files, but something like Sound or Texture only needs the ones you have changed. Just try with trial and error; that's how I did it. :)

I'm one of the 7 deadly sins admins.  7DS is not nor has it ever been compatible with 1.1

we will be releasing 2.0 soon for version 1.05, then will be converting to 1.1

i suggest you read the 7 deadly sins faq www.sri-corp.com

saviordd1 these are the paths to follow in a 64bit windows 7 but for 32 bit vishta all you do is remove the (x86)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\
C:\Users\'username'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

the second one is the one you need BUT you MUST unhide hidden files & folders

Okay so i know people have asked for a simple guide to install mods, but i need an even SIMPLER one lol I just recently got a computer so i really dont know much about it. Im using windows vista, and I download the mods off the internet, and I can put it into a Mod folder but I dont know how to activate them, what do I have to do to get them to work? And now I cant even start my game because it says that the program encountered an error, but idk what that means....

Here goes...OPEN sins

Go into OPTIONS

Select MODS

Click "SHOW MOD PATH"

Write it down (this is hard part..kids nowadays are too lazy to even do that.....if you need a hint....use what we call a "pen" and see what happens when you use it on what we call "paper")

Under Windows, open SEARCH

Copy the link (don't forget to include hidden files)

AND THERE YOU GO!

And to avoid asking this question 1 000 000 times.... MAKE A SHORTCUT OF IT!

Voila ;)

Simple enough

Okay thanks, I at least got it to where I can enable mods to work on the game in the Options menu, still having a little bit of trouble getting them to work but I think I'll just download them again and try again. This is confusing :(O

Thanks for the info though

Okay now i figured all that stuff out, but I'm having trouble getting them to actually work. I downloaded the mods and they're in the Mods folder, and when I go to the Options menu in-game and select it, and activate it, it SAYS it's activated but when I start a new game, nothing happens. What do I need to do to fix that? I just recently downloaded the Mad Scientist mod for Entrenchment, and I know the research trees look different, but when i start new games, they're the same. I dont know anything about this kind of stuff so any help would be appreciated ^_^

Means the mod file is in another folder of itself...so the game recognises the changes as you say but since its "one step further" instead of having Modname ---> gameinfo....you have modname---folder---gameinfo.

Game bumps on that!
