JoeUser Version 2 Arrives

A whole new world!

It's a whole new JoeUser.

The site has been completely rewritten from scratch. Some features haven't been completely re-implemented and there are bound to be some glitches.

But we now have the kind of backend and application support to do all kinds of cool stuff.

In the coming days, various usability tweaks will be made as we discover what key little features we've overlooked. Then, in the next few weeks, we'll start to add in new abilities and such.

We hope you like the new setup. I think as you look around your blogs you'll find that you have a lot more control than before and will find that things actually (shock) work much better than the old system.

So far so good. When do we get our secret decoder rings?

Is it up yet? Everytime I try logging on the blog site I get thrown back into the forums...eh, I'll give it some more time.

Nice work, though. Takes a bit to get used to, but pretty damn good.

I like it so far. The look is a bit of a change but I'm sure everyone will get used to it.

Thanks to you and the team for all your hard work. Well done!

Alright, I've logged on now. :)  For some reason the "Log In" link in the top right kept bumping me to the forums.

I just went to the main page and logged in...all is well for me. :P

If you're having trouble logging in or accessing the new site, clear all of your cookies, browser cache and temp internet files and try again.

By the way...why am I down to 6,000 points now?  I was around 32,000.

Also, that "Bad Auth" error is back in regards to trying to edit a comment.

One minor issue, the forums no longer remember the last comment viewed in a thread and ya have to scroll down through them.

Woo hoo. I really like this new format.

The only thing I miss is the JU homepage. Are we going to be getting that? When I type in joeuser.com I go straight to the forums.

I think the homepage was a great idea because it was a nice and easy introduction for newbies. Several people in my family read joeuser and comment on how easy it was to navigate from the home page.

Plus, I really like seeing featured articles.

Other than that....I think it looks great.

Brown is very chic.

Ok, I am a big dum dummy.  I am getting the homepage now.

I will get used to it....heh.

Hi,

I tried to post something with a picture and the picture wouldn't show, for some reason. Is this potentially one of the glitches you mentioned? Other than this, it works like a charm. Thanks again  :)

I really don't like how small eveything is. I never understood wesites that only use a third of the screen. The coment box is way too tiny, spread it out guys like it was before. I don't even have a wide screen monitor and it's this thin little strip of tiny text down my screen. Give us middle aged guys holding off reading glasses as long as possible a break. ;)

Another question - I noticed that on our personal blogs our avatars are quite a bit bigger - more like 100x100 instead of 50x50.  Consequently, when the default 50x50 pic gets scaled up it looks pretty craptacular.  So I went to my dashboard to see about putting in a bigger pic, but it still says the avatar size is 50x50.

Will we be able to change the avatars to a bigger size so they don't look all sickly and pixelated when on the bigger site?

I had reason to embed a youtube in a response the other day, and on the editor toolbar there was a little "html" button that allowed me to do so. I subsequently broke the internet :P

Ok, not the internet, but it seriously disturbed the formatting of all the replies which followed, so maybe this feature has been temporarily removed until it's tweaked.

To Draginol,

Thanks for all this - you didn't have to. This update shows a LOT of hard work on the part of your team, and I for one appreciate it. That in mind, could you and your folks point us at a "bug report" thread when responding to various "concerns" in some of the various "New JU" commentary threads that have popped up? It would be more useful for you guys for us to put all of our "concerns" in the proper forum :)

Thanks again,
One JU

You shouldn't need to insert break tags manually to format your posts anymore.

Great job, JU!

The site looks and feels a whole lot better.  Some aspects remind me of blogger.com, others aspects remind me of other blog sites like yahoo 360 or multiply.com

In any event, it seems easy to use and the features are more user friendly, it seems to me.

Be well.

Jewbu - thats no coincidence. We're on a mission to learn from the best, and apply what we learn here.

Maybe it's my connection, but JU still seems to go a lot slower than some of the other Stardock sites.

I compared the forums on GalCivII and WinCustomize and neither seems to take the time it takes to load a page here.  It's been pretty freakin' slow for me lately.

As I said, it might be my connection, but I can definitely see the speed difference on GalCiv - it's a lot quicker, but JU seems to still be a titch sluggish.

Does the forum feature no longer exist? I can't find a forum link, and when I visit a channel through the "popular channels" area, it doesn't list all the available articles, but rather the blown up title and 200 words, similar to what's found on the homepage.

Is there an easy way to browse through articles?

Is it a particular page?  Are you logged in?  Logged out?  What are you seeing in the status bar at the bottom of your browser as the page loads?

If the WC and GC2 forums are loading fast, and this slow, it's a problem with this site.  Since it's brand new, we're going to be doing a lot of speed tweaking as we get more people on the site.

Couple of issues (concerns really).

Quote and blacklist are too close together.  Can we separate them?

Is there a page with the newest articles?  I liked that as I culc go there to see what I was missing.

But it does seem to be a WHOLE lot faster!  I like the posting now.

Logged in on all three sites. It seems to be the main JU pages that are loading the slowest - the new JU forums are still snappy, but it can take 2-3 minutes to load an article on someone's blog. On the status bar (using FF) it says "waiting for little-whip.joeuser.com" (for example, the one that took over 3 minutes) and the status bar doesn't move, and then suddenly the whole thing will pop up.

Hope that helps.

For example: I've got three tabs open, one on the JU forums, one on the GalCiv forums, one on the JU main page. I've read two articles that I hadn't loaded previously in the GalCiv forums and read a new post in the forums here and it still hasn't loaded MasonM's newest article on the main page - it just says it's waiting still . . .

Again, I hope this information helps. I love the new look and am excited to utilize all the new functionality, but first I got to get it so it can load. ;)

You guys rock. Sincerely,

A mean old JoeUser and proud Stardock customer ;)

I like.

/me goes to see if he can add a blog to my blogroll from a blog or if he has to go to his dashboard thing-y

I have trouble logging on from work, but I believe it has to do with the servers here. I can't log in from the main page (even after cleaning out the cookies and stuff) but I am logged on in the forums but sometimes am not logged on when clicking an article. Kinda funky, huh?

If you accidentally click on Blacklist, you'll get a pop-up asking to confirm the action, so you won't be blacklisting people unless you really mean to.

As for the "newest" page.  That's coming back, it just wasn't something we could get in for launch.
