It's true! 

All the assumptions that have been made about me by certain fictional characters are true.

I am a housewife.

I stay home and take care of my home and my family.

I am the queen of the kitchen, the mistress of the mop, the CEO of the toilet bowl.

I am a nurse, a doctor, a pharmacist, a chef, a maid, a teacher, a landscaper, a chaueffer, a veterinarian, an interior decorator, an accountant, a seamstress, a nutritionist, a mechanic, a maintenance person....

I nurture, I care, I give.  I work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I don't get days off or sick leave.  There is no down time.  There are no holidays, federal or otherwise.

I am the backbone of this family...there when no-one else can be there, I shoulder the responsibilities, and I do so gladly. 

I am a housewife. 

And I am proud (and anything but bored)

And from what you show on here Dharma your doin your job really really well! You have beautiful children who are growing up with some of the most wonderful traits thanks to the love you give them.

Your an amazing woman, never doubt that. Your my american mum, and a dear friend as well an angel in disguise.

I should have added in there that I'm not stupid or intellectually dim, nor and I doing this because I can't find a job. I'm chosing to stay at home.  I didn't have kids to have someone else raise them.  I want them to have values that Dave and I instill in them, not those of a daycare provider or overworked teacher. 


I stay home because happy, healthy, secure kids and a happy, healthy secure husband are important to me.  That's the bottom line.

I was a "house husband" for about a year and a half while working on a book, too. Keeping house full time and fulfilling those responsibilities for the family is just as vital as any work anyone can do. I was never bored, either, and it made me appreciate every person who gives themself totally to the family like that. Good post, you get *insightful* from me!

Good for you! I agree with what Little Whip said above here. Working at home (and being a housewife is work, especially if there are kids living in the house) isn't all bonbons and soaps. Keep up the good work!

Dharma, way to go. My wife is the same (though she does do some work outside the home to help keep student loans down), and I tell you, for those moms who do it right, it is without a doubt the most demanding job on the planet. CEO's and Chairmen of Boards ain't got nothing on a good mom/wife.

This is a great article, dharma. I think it's sad that more people don't value the work of a woman inside the home.

Another thing people don't realize is that by providing a comfortable home and a smooth home life for our husbands, stay-at-home moms (housewives . . . he he he) are helping our husbands be their best at their jobs, which translates into better job performance and promotions for them. Stay-at-home moms contribute to the family in so many ways.

I particularly liked this:

Myrrander: Thanks!  I do find it fulfilling...my home is my hobby, and my kids are..well, my all.

Chip:  I wish I could dispel the myth that all housewives do is sit on the couch, watch soaps and eat bon-bons a la Peggy Bundy.  I don't watch that much TV, and I have absolutely no interest in soap operas.  I read, I study, I write...I'm not bored, I don't have time!

Dev: It is demanding, but it's very worthwhile.

Absolutely.  My husband's job is the one that brings home the bacon.  It's important to me that he be able to go to work and not have to worry about things at home, that he be able to concentrate on his job (especially because he's armed every day). 

This is an equal opportunity household.  He goes off and does cop work, and I stay home and do 'house' work.  The kids are a joint venture, and sometimes we help each other with our jobs (I'm good at writing reports and EPR's now, and Dave's a dab hand with a vacum cleaner).

I am housewife hear me roar!   I'm with you cyber-sis.  I am a fellow domestic goddess and wouldn't trade it for anything.  My family is healthy, happy and secure.  It works for our family too.  There really should be a national homemaker day don't ya think?!


There was a shooting at a Detroit day care center yesterday and a 3yr old girl died.  I thanked all that is good that I am able to have my children at home with me and pray that violence never finds them while at school.

LW: that was a great response....

Women are pressured by the women's lib movement to 'have it all'.  A career, a home, a family, a happy marriage...we are told, as you said, that we are failures if we do not achieve all of those criteria. 

I tried working.  Everyone lost out.  I was tired all the time, I wasn't there for my kids or my husband, I had too much stuff to do and too little time to do it in.  No-one was happy.  So, I quit.  And I've been happier being home and being a 'housefrau' than I ever was being at work. 

I'm going to go back to work sometime, but right now that's just not my priority.  Raising happy, well adjusted kids, and having a happy home and family life is.

I wish i could find an article i read some years ago that studied the finances of about a dozen "average working moms."


I've seen and heard similar statistics, but it was a few years ago. At that point, the stats were that 90% of all working mothers could come home for about $400 a month. In the military, especially in the lower enlisted ranks where wives tend to be younger and less educated, many could not afford to work because day care alone would cost more than any job they got would pay.
