I Realize That The Ice Cream Is Free, But...

If I could just have one more topping, please...

OK, this is something that is really not that big a deal at all, just something I've been thinking about recenlty (yeah, I probably do need some help). Over the past week, my score has dropped by three points on three separate occasions. I know what you're thinking... 'How can that be? There's never been a problem with JU's math before...' Well, it's not a problem with the math, I can assure you.

I've been trolled. Now, the next thing to pop into your mind is 'How can that be? chiprj is the sweetest guy on JU! Who would troll him?' OK, so the only person really thinking that would be my mom... no, that's not true... she knows me too well, too.

Now, I don't have a complaint about being trolled. I'm sure I deserved it, wherever it came from. I've said many things here on the forums that was troll-worthy. I've also made liberal use of the troll button (as well as the interesting and insightful features). I mean, if you get on a thread and hijack it in a mean, name-calling way, I'm gonna reach out and touch you. Conversely, if you post an article that shows that you are obviously clueless about the facts (I'm not talking about opinion, I mean if you are flat out so wrong about something that you can't even spell the terminology right, let alone find out anything about the topic in the first place), I'm going to make some mean comments in your direction. And, I should get trolled for doing that, too. I mean, that's exactly what I'm doing. I freely admit it. I troll. I've done this a few times and I'd just like to know what I'm getting slapped for.

Now, that brings us to the title of this article. I realize that the ice cream is free. I enjoy the ice cream here at JU. It is very tasty! And I truly do appreciate it. But, if I could just have on more topping, please. This is my suggestion and if any admin/Stardock/Joeuser employee should happen to read this and think think I should shove my suggestion where the sun doesn't shine, well that's OK. I'm just suggesting here. I really don't know how hard a job it would be to add a feature like this. Please don't think I'm in any way trying to demand something. I will live happily with this JU ice cream for free as long as you offer it.

My suggestion is this - could there be an alert that goes out if you receive a trolling, insightful, or interesting ranking. As near as I can tell right now, you can only tell if you see that your score has been affected. There is already a mechanism in place to lets you know that an article in your watchlist is updated, so would it be possible to add something like that into that mechanism? Nothing like, 'you've been trolled by user X, you fool!' But maybe something that says you've been rated an Insightful for a comment on a particular article. No need to say who it was that rated you. Nothing good can come from that. But maybe a note saying you've been trolled or insightfulled.

Maybe I'm asking too much. If so, that's fine. Just something I've been thinking about.

The other title I thought of for this was 'Did You Troll Me?' but I figured I shouldn't confuse people with my 'Did You Call Me?'... I mean, confusing the readers could lead me to get more trollings... And I am trying to be good, so we don't want any of that... HAHAHAHA!

Well, I've never thought you've been deserving of a trolling . . . you're always funny, on-topic, and respectful of others, whether you agree with them or not.

I think your idea is good though . . . it would be nice to know when these things happen . . . I know I've been trolled before, but I don't know that I've received an insightful or interesting, but if I did get one, it'd be cool to know it and not try to figure it out based on points.

Good idea, chiprj!

I would really like such a feature. I don't know for sure if I have been trolled before. I can certainly think of a time or two that I deserved and it probably happened, but just having to go off our score can get a bit tedious and inaccurate.

The only problem I see with it is if you knew what you were trolled for (and I would certainly like to know) it would probably be obvious in most cases who trolled you.

For instance, I was just trolled. I'm pretty sure it was for my comment on JesusStaysCrunchy's anti-Brad thread "Free Speech Protection." A benign enough, strictly FYI post on my part, but raising the ire of an obvious lunatic. Assuming I am right and that is where I got trolled, then it is pretty obvious who trolled me.

In your case, losing three points instead of two gives you an extra clue -- it wasn't a "citizen" level user that did it.

Personally, I'd still rather see the troll feature totally eliminated.

I don't understand about this . . . different user levels take away different amounts of points? Does the same apply (in reverse) for insightful or interestings?

Yes. Citizens are +/- 2 points. Moderators are +/- 100 points. I can't remember all the in between ones, but the next step up from citizen is +/- 3 points.

There are citizens, there are power users, there are elites, and then there are admins.

I'm an elite.  I get three times the amount of points for posting, trolling, and insightful ratings.

I didn't troll you, in case you were wondering.  I have trolled a couple of people this week...I believe that Imajinit was one for a stunt he pulled on Janders' thread...but you weren't one of them.

ahh . . . so I am a lowly private and dharma is a staff sargeant, and Karma is a Captain? You're not going to smoke me, are you dharma? he he he . . .

Nope.  There are a few people who I'd really, really like to smoke, but you're not one of them.

Gene,

No actually, it's a slightly different equation. I can't remember the exact formula or I would tell you, suffice it to say, for higher users, the impact can be MUCH more than 3 points hit for trolling.

I can't comment on his threads, I'm blacklisted. And after he made such a HUGE case out of me blacklisting someone else...lol. So, not only is he a lunatic, he's also an incredible hypocrite. Fortunately, he's just the flavor of the day...lol

I'm not, but I expect to be shortly.

And you're right, he is a hypocritical lunatic.

What's the criteria for moving up in user level? I am having trouble wrapping my brain around all this . . .

What's the criteria for moving up in user level?

It's at admin's discretion.  The way it was explained was that they give status to people they want to keep around.

Muggaz and I had a spat because I got moved to elite and he didn't...despite the fact that he's been here a bit longer than me. You're a smart girl,  that should tell you something.....

That makes sense . . . although technically you can't "earn" status, I can see how that method helps the site.

Understand completely.

I've noticed there's a lot of jealousy around here when someone gets promoted...which has taught me it's best not to say anything when you notice someone got moved up...

Or you can be like me and not give a shit. It's just a passtime for me, I find it fun to write stuff whether anybody reads it or not, but then that's just me...

I deduce from the chart Brad posted that hitting the "Interesting" button on an article is worth your user rank squared, and the "Insightful" button is twice that. The Trolling and Insightful buttons on posts are worth User Rank*2, except there seems to be a bit of difficulty there because that doesn't make a range of 1 to 18, so I"m not quite sure how you get 1 or 3.

User ranks apparently range from 1 to 9, with admins slotted in at 10.

Not always, but I do try most of the time! Thanks TW!

Here is an insightful for you Chiprj..

Thanks, PB!

..."congrats, you just earned an insightful rating on comment # 13 in the "i want to pork your momma" thread, or..."you jerk, you just got trolled on comment # 42 in the "goat meat is good for you" discussion.

Very nice, LW! I like the you jerk part better than the you fool!

The only problem I see with it is if you knew what you were trolled for (and I would certainly like to know) it would probably be obvious in most cases who trolled you.

Yeah, that could cause problems. But, I'd still like to know what threads I got it on...

In your case, losing three points instead of two gives you an extra clue -- it wasn't a "citizen" level user that did it.

I've double checked the points system link at the bottom of the blog pages and it says it's 2X the user level. Don't know how I could have lost 3 points under that concept. But the first time I noticed my points went down it was from a 5 to a 2 (last digit of the score). Thanks for stopping by Gene!

For instance, I was just trolled. I'm pretty sure it was for my comment on JesusStaysCrunchy's anti-Brad thread "Free Speech Protection." I have self blacklisted myself from answering on his/her (I always misread the name as Jessica stays scrunchy for some reason) blog. Nothing good could come from my comments there. I would not be able to moderate myself and would quickly drop into name calling, I'm sure. He/she has rarely, if ever, posted in a coherent or related way to a topic he/she disagreed with.

Or you can be like me and not give a shit. It's just a passtime for me, I find it fun to write stuff whether anybody reads it or not, but then that's just me...

You're absolutely right. Like I said, I'd just like to know which rude comment I got the trolling for. I don't dispute I deserve it!

Click "The Scoring System" at the bottom of the screen.

Point System: Articles
. . .
A user can also rate an article as "Interesting" or "Insightful".  Interesting = Your access class squared. Insightful = 2 X Your access class squared.  Where an anonymous user is access class 1, a registered user 2, an admin is 10.  As we finish things up, trusted users will be granted higher access classes (3, 4, 5, etc.).  A user with access class 3 giving an article a "interesting" rating would give that article 9 points. Or in the case of an Insightful rating, 18 points.

Okay, I didn't address that one... I was only concerning myself with trolling/insightful, to wit...

Point System: Users
. . .
If a user says your comment is insightful you get bonus points. If, however, they say you're trolling you lose points. How many points you get is heavily based on your access level (an anonymous user saying your trolling won't really do anything). The amount is the 2X(access level -1).  So an anonymous user saying yay or nay gives no points. A regular user can give + or - 2 points.

Which doesn't clear up anything at all.

I knew better. Even as I typed, I mentally screamed at myself, "Don't do it, you fool! You're asking for trouble!" Did I listen? Do I ever? I merrily clicked "post comment" anyway.

Given that, I probably got what I deserved.

I have now resolved to be like chiprj and blacklist myself from said blog.

Gene: You did not deserve a trolling for the comment you made on JessicaCrunchy's thread . . . you were polite and informative . . . trust me, you didn't deserve it.
