Working as part of playing a video game

What's the deal?

Apparently the new Grand Theft Auto game will require that you work out to stay in shape -- in the game. Now, why would I do something in a game that I won't bother to do in real life?

It reminds me of the early days of playing Ultima Online:

[Select Mining Pick]
[Target Rock]
"No ore found"

[Select Mining Pick]
[Target Rock]
"No ore found"

[Select Mining Pick]
[Target Rock]
["Iron Ore found. 1/1000 units to create ingot. 50 ingots needed for 1 gold coin. 10 gold coins needed to purchase leather boots."]

(much time passes)

[Purchase: Leather boots]

"I'm going to go exploring!"

["You are traveling the path, a group of travelers stand in the road."]

[Draginol speaks: "Hi Guys! Seen anything cool?"]

[l33tDude Casts Fireball]

[Draginol Dies]

["You have died. Items lost: Leather boots."]

["You have been resurrected near the iron mine. 0/1000 iron units in hand to create ingot. 50 ingots needed for 1 gold. You have 0 gold."]

This is what leads to people going onto eBay and buying a buff character. 20 minutes later and $50 poorer.

[["You are traveling the path, a group of travelers stand in the road."]

["BastardDraginol casts chain lightning"]

["l33tDude dies"]
["Megadeath dies"]
["OwnzU dies"]
["NBKillR dies"]

So the question is, will we be able to buy bad ass Grand Theft Auto guys from eBay?

I saw all this text and my immediate thought was that you were playing NetHack Whoops...I meant to say a MUD.

I guess the more 'realistic' games get, the more 'fun' they become... Or so the makes of GTA think...

I have a theory that the more "real life" things people want to do in video games, the more they don't do those "real life" things in real life.

I hope they don't make it too complicated. Sure, a bit of realism is always fun, but they have to remember what made the games so popular in the first place: car-jacking, prostitutes, and murder.
It would be cool if you could work out so much that you'd become unstoppable though.

well, I think its just the beginning. It has already started with other games, particularly on line. On day, say Grand Turismo, you will be able to buy custom car jobs that somebody made on-line. You get there saved car and upload it into yours.

Simple huh???

My dream driving game is both GTA and Grand Turismo combined fr race tracks, city driving, shoot them up missions, and so on. Ad making your own car or buying custom cars from each other, custom avatars, and so on and you got yourself a major game with an mini-industry all on its own.
