1.03: Notice on saved games

Just a repeat of a general policy:

We do not garauntee that saved games will work correctly between .X revisions (i.e. 1.0 to 1.01, 1.01 to 1.02 and so forth).

1.03 adds political parties and has tweaks to other gameplay aspects that can affect your saved game. Your save game should still load, but things may be weird in it.

It makes no diffence I am unable to locate the new patch. I am registered member entered my serial number but no patch no place to be found. Why is it so difficult to place a patch in an easy area to find? :sniff!: :notsure:

Desert Fox, it is sometimes useful to click on View -> Refresh (it's the bottom entry of the View menu). Also, it may be because the server you were on at the time was being updated while the other server already had it?

Oh, forgot to mention. View -> Refresh updates the tab (Software, News, Discussion, etc) that you're currently viewing.

I must be really stupid or something. I tried what you said I still do not see any 1.3 patch. I just do not understand why it is this hard to locate. It should be on the galciv website. Thanks for your help even though it did not show me anything. (:(

Eh. If that didn't work, try Tools -> Settings -> Connection tab -> Current Server and change it from Atlanta to California (or vice versa).

Other option is to try Tools -> Refresh Application Data.

Or a combination of these two things. I already have the patch, got it from the Atlanta server.

Hope this helps out. If not, give it a day and try again with all the options I've mentioned.

Oh, duh. Most obvious option to try: Close Stardock Central and restart it. That might solve the problem LOL

Hey thanks I finally found it, but I had a really good game going finally and now it is all messed up. My morale went down to 1-10% at all colonies. :sniff!: (:( Oh well I guess I start over I hope there are not any serious flaws with this patch. Now to get to work on making some mods for this GREAT game. :D LOL

You have the most bizarre patch process I have ever seen, which is used to do in your face pushing a a strange collection of products I don't want to buy. Why can't you just make patches available on the Galciv site like most other companies do with their products? Frankly, I'm annoyed.

For those unable to figure this wierd process out, several hours of trial and error yielded the following:

Look at the top of this window. You'll see some menu items - File, View, Tools, Help. Hit Tools, and you'll see "Register Products". That opens a window where they try to get you to buy all sorts of strange stuff. However, if you click on the drecknet (sorry - drengnet or whatever) tab, a new windo opens up that does not show Galciv. It shows "Drengnet subscription", whatever that is. However, there is a field where you can enter your CD Key. Fill in your name and e-mail (pray its not immediately entered on a spam list, though it seems to me I am getting a lot more spam since doing this!) and somehow it figures out that you have a legal copy of GalCiv.

Once you've done that, you can get to the updates, by clicking the little software icon below the "File" and "View" items on the very top of the menu bar. That opens a window where, if you look very carefully, you'll see that you can click on an update that looks like its 1.02, but its really 1.03.

Sheesh, if you don't like SDC then just wait for the stand alone update.

No one is forcing you to use SDC just as nothing is forcing us to provide regular updates.

PS - the one thing that does not help is going to "Support" at Stardock.com.

I'm at a loss to understand why I need a Galciv site, a stardock site, and a drengin site for all of this.

Alank287, not sure what you're problem is, but it's not Stardock. Updates always show up with their exact version number and while not immediately obvious, the software is pretty intuitive. It's not much different than setting up an email client - if you can run a computer with any degree of competency, you can figure it out.

Now, granted I've been using their Object Desktop client (which SDC apparently can replace) for some time, but I figured out exactly what to do on the first shot. Besides, if you don't like it, they do put patches up on their website, just not incremental ones so you have to wait a week or two. It would take far too much of their time to keep creating stand alone patches every few days for often trivial fixes.

Repeat after me: the ability to get incremental patches sooner through SDC is a *service* that goes above and beyond the support I've EVER gotten for a video game. Don't like it? Pretend it doesn't exist and wait 2-3 weeks between patches on the website - that's still better service than you'll get from 99% of the developers out there >:(

Why must I wait for the standalone patch? And where will it be located? Why can't the GalCiv people just put it under "Support", or "patches", or "downloads" on the Galciv site? What earthly purpose does Stardock or drengnet serve except to push other products at people who bought the game (which is a great game - just the update thing is wierd).

Because stand alone patches require significantly more effort to put together than updating via SDC.

SDC exists to make it easier and more seamless for us to provide updates and for users to receive them. It also saves considerable bandwidth since it only downloads what is needed whereas a stand alone patch ends up cummulative.

The stand alone updates come out as often as updates for other games, about once per month. If you think SDC is so terrible then simply wait until we have time to put together a stand alone update.

Um, I build computers for a living, gaming computers to be frank. I had major problems figuring out the location of the patch as well. There is no need to attack someone's competency when they are having trouble. It just amazes me how people hiding behind a keyboard can make statements like that. Why not save your little comments for people in the real world. See what happens to your face. Show a little respect for others will you please. >:(

they arent "pushing" a bunch of products, this is the sw to patch all the stuff they make. And the reason they dont put As Many stand-alone patches on the website is, iirc, cause its a pain and this isnt. Would you rather the acted like othre companies and left popular games unpatched for 6 months when hundreds of people are bitching aobut hundreds of bugs? *cough* bethesda *cough* morrowind *cough*.

i know its been said like 50 times before, just wanted to get my .02$$ in

;p Brad.

To others: If you want a better view of what updates have occured (and you're using SDC, not STAND ALONE PATCHES (my emphasis :p ):

1) If you're completely up to date, then you'll be seeing something like this on the Software tab:

Name /Installed /Available/Updated/Action
Galciv/v1.0x(.xx)/---------/(date) /

2) If you're not up to date, you'll see something like this (when you've selected it):

Galciv/v1.0x(.xx)/v1.0y(.yy)/(date) /(button saying 'Install')

3) If you want to see the mini-updates and don't have the view set to do this already, click on:

Tools -> Settings... -> General tab -> Applications section of General tab -> click so a tickmark appears beside Show Application Revisions -> press OK

Point 1 and 2 are simple... if you can be bothered remembering LOL. Point 3 is more difficult than points 1 and 2, but less difficult than trying to set up OpenOffice/Word/whatever.

Code Monkey that last message was addressed to you. You have no respect for anyone it is obvious. Come visit me in Vegas I will adjust your attitude for you. >:( :d

If it was put on the webpage it would be the standalone patch and you wouldn't have to wait for it.

Stardock Central is just a easier way to release mini-patches between standalone releases. You don't have to download it right away as the game is still playable, and even if you don't want to use it the standalone patches are still released pretty rapidly.

~SDC~
Um, it is under downloads on the main GalCiv site, exactly where you would expect it. It's currently version 1.02, 1.03 will be out later. You must wait precisely for the reason I said: it takes a lot of time to construct a self-installing patch, whereas SDC does it on the fly automatically.

Also, where do they push other products on you? If you do subscribe to Drengin.net, you get *all* of their games published to date, and all of their games published in the next 18 months for $20 more than the price of GalCiv, waah!, those evil capitalists. For people who have picked up GalCiv on sale at a store for $30, they can use the coupon for the $20 upgrade to D.net, and wind up with several games for the price of one. Again, waaah!, those evil capitalists.

Stardock has a nice sales model: buying in volume not only gets you cheaper costs up front, but it guarantees longterm support. It's a choice. And, I don't for a minute believe you're getting spam as a result of Stardock. I've been registered with them for about a year and a half and other than an occasional coupon for one of their products, nothing more than before.

"Code Monkey that last message was addressed to you. You have no respect for anyone it is obvious. Come visit me in Vegas I will adjust your attitude for you."

Sure you will. My attitude is the same attitude in real life as it is behind a keyboard. I am helpful, I am basically a nice guy, but I give back what someone else gives. Make a whiney, bitchey post, and I'm going to respond in kind.

Respect is earned, never given freely.

Moderator warning: Do not threaten people, Desert Fox. I suggest you re-read what he said. He was not disrespectful, he was trying to communicate with you in a light fashion. Either way though, do not make threaten other users. This will be your only warning.

And for the record, I do stand by that statement 100%, if you can run a computer *competently*, then you could figure it out without all the gnashing and wailing.
Also, before you get too riled up that last post, please consider that people may have completely different ideas of what 'competent' means. I come from a background of having been building and configuring systems for myself, friends, family, and even on the job sometimes for years. My idea of 'competence' is definitely out of whack with the general public, and probably yours as well.

Lords know my wife has wanted to kill me on more than one occasion for the things that I just expect everyone knows ;)

"Fill in your name and e-mail (pray its not immediately entered on a spam list, though it seems to me I am getting a lot more spam since doing this!) and somehow it figures out that you have a legal copy of GalCiv."

I assume you used your usual email address and not an address set up specifically to handle your GalCiv/Stardock registration?
I have a seperate address for it and am receiving *zero* spam to it.

Setting up SDC properly is a pain in the butt - but you only have to do it once! Then you get extremely frequent updates to the game; anything from bug fixes to new features to balance adjustments. Seems like a fair effort-to-reward ratio to me... :)

;) Once SDC runs its really shines and I now I love it => small updates regulary only a few hundreds kbts big.

My grip is up to now I really don´t know how it started working for me in the beginning. This what happened to me more or less.

I installed galciv put in my serial, went to stardock homepage, looked around selected galciv got some advertisment finally landed in drengin network and still didn´t find any way to update galciv. Found at last here on this page the SDC. Installed and started it and still only got the stardock homepage.(spend around an hour). I was really fustrated turned off the computer turned it on again started SDC again this time I got another screen then before. Played around selected software and finally could see the updates and it worked well afterwards up to now... :)

If other players are without clue like myself I can understand that you get frustrated with the update process. Once it works it is really beautiful and IMHO opinon the most elegant way to update a game I have ever seen.

Select galciv on the software tab, and hit ctrl + p, this will force it to download an update if there is one.
