Lock It Up!

And get outta my school house!

I am the duty MLI this week. That doesn't really mean much. The main duty is to stay after work and lock up when everyone has gone home for the day. On MWF, quitting time is 1645 and lock up is at 1700 (4:45 PM and 5 PM for those not on military time). On Tuesday and Thursday we have study hall classes at night, so lock up is at 2030 (8:30 PM). A little before closing time, I have to go through the school house and check to make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked. I also have to make sure that everyone is out of the building.

It seems every time I have this duty, I have to deal with the same repeat offenders. The students are usually pretty good about closing and locking things. Most classes have rosters of people assigned to different tasks so it's rare that I find a classroom window unlocked or trash in a can. If I do, I just leave a note on the white board for them to see when the come in the next morning.

The instructors are another matter. The same people are always leaving the same windows open at the end of the day. We have a checklist that we write all deficiencies on and turn it in before we leave. But nothing ever happens. I've taken to carrying a post it pad with me and I leave notes on the windows when they are left open. I mean, if you leave a second floor window unlatched, is it likely someone will scale the wall in an effort to steal computer gear? Not likely, but when you leave a window wide open on the backside of the building, you are just asking for trouble.

Another issue is that the instructors like to stay around in an office and 'talk story' as they like to say in Hawaii. I usually make one pass of the building a little early and check all the empty rooms. I stick my head into occupied offices to let people know I'm on patrol and that it's nearly quitting time. They usually acknowledge me and tell me that they will be out the door soon. I keep a list of all the occupied rooms so I know exactly which ones I have left to check. After my first pass, I wait until 1645 at the front office. I then make another pass and knock out all the offices on my list that are empty. I also start locking the outside doors. I also stick my head in all occupied offices and make a remark about it being time to leave. Responses have varied from 'Just 5 more minutes, please' to 'I'm waiting for an important phone call at 6 PM'. 6 PM? No how, no way. I can't go home until they do, and I'm not sticking around for a 6 PM phone call! I've had to force people out of the building on many occasions - almost every day I've had lock up duty.

I know, I should be thankful that these are the big problems that face me every couple of months. But it's annoying as crap. And I know that these aren't problems that surface coincidentally with my having duty MLI. The others deal with these issues, too, but it's only ever for one week at a time. So, it seems that nothing ever changes.

Ah, I'm just bored as crap this morning...

May have to get drastic and flip the main breaker.

Too bad they're not taking a shower, you could just go turn off the hot water. Nothing gets a 10 year old girl moving out a shower that she's been in 45 minutes like a blast of cold water.

How bout getting a bottle of deer scent and setting it down right outside their door with the cap off. Ish. That'd get them outta there too.

Hey, btw, I LOVE reading your practical jokes. The desktop screen on was a riot. I can't wait to try it on my boss. Got any more?

I do turn the hall lights off, but that has no effect.

I have a list around here somewhere. Just haven't gotten around to finding it just yet...

Chiprj: Inconsiderate jerks. I'd be pissed if my husband was late getting home because some jerks were standing around talking about Alien vs. Predator and keeping him from locking up. Good luck with it.

One of my favorite ways to tell them that it's time to leave is to say, 'I want to get home to my beautiful wife. Don't you want to go home?'

Lock them in! That'll teach them

I've had them suggest I do just that. They can still get out the main doors (they are only locked to people trying to get in). But that's not our policy. So, I'm stuck with just kicking them out.

Now, that is crap! Who cares about policy when it's time to go home, eh??

Oh, crap, I can't stop laughing now!!!

Isn't that just the best bit about JU? There's always that surprising comment that throws you for ages, and then your belly hurts from laughing too much!

How about for every minute they stay late, they have to start an equal amount of time earlier in the morning? Or make them pay for every minute they waste!

That would be a good system... Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of influence... someday I will be king of the world... In the meantime, I'll just have to continue translating the song lyrics of Semisonic into Korean -

'Closing time, you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here'

Well, that sounds like a good start... I think?!

Talking of not staying here, I have to go do some work now!
