Whom to believe?

According to the graph at the right on the main screen I'm way ahead of the others in technology, but according to my stats screen I'm in 4th or 5th place in technology. Which one is right?

Possibly both. The graph shows currect technology spending. I think the ranking is for how much technology you currently possess.

Graphs are *always* current - current tech spending, current manufacturing capability, current population, current influence, current blahblahblah.

The rankings are overall. :)

The graphs on the main screen show current spending, they are virtually useless(IMO), apart from showing what the AI is currently up to. The population graph is useful though, because it shows to true state of play.

Military is *always* useful, because you know when you have enough for the AI to not extort from you.

Other than that, yeah, it just shows you how much they're spending relative to you.

But doesn't the military graph also only show how much you are spending on military at the moment, not how powerful your military is?

Not in my experience.

Manufacturing = How much manufacturing you're doing (social or military)
Influence = How much influence (the voting kind) you have
Population = How much population
Economy = How much income
Tech = How much research
Military = How much damage your military can inflict, or rather, how strong it is.
