G'day,

I was rather excited today, when I found another Aussie in JU! I saw the title "The Return to OZ" and clicked. It was about someone who's coming back to Oz after being away for a while! While she wasn't coming back for the happiest of reasons, I think anyone from Australia, who spends time overseas, kinda looks forward to coming back (... esp. to Sydney, the greatest city in the world!)

I sent quick comment to say welcome back when you get back, and that it was good to see another Aussie! I then get a reply from Trina_p to sy that there's heaps of us in here!

Now... as you might well have guessed, i'm a Proud Aussie! I love that we don't take ourselves seriously, that we place more importance on the Wallabies than the War and that one beer can change a stranger into a mate! I just thought that i'd let the rest of the Aussies either...

a. Agree with me here, and tell everyone what it is that they love about being an Aussie.

b. Tell me i'm a Poof for SAYING I love Australia (... it's an Aussie thing to do!) on JU!

I don't think that being an Aussie can be explained, infact, maybe the fact that it can't might be the very fact that it IS special! Let me know wht you think!

One thing I love about being an Aussie is that there's noone in the world that I have to call "sir". Everyone in Australia over the age of about 17 calls everyone else by their first name only. I haven't seen that kind of equality anywhere else in the world.

I am an Aussie as well!!! I have plenty of Aussie stories, but they mostly revolve around how we are better than everyone else, and I dont want to offend our international friends on the forums!!!

Welcome to JU mate... It will be good to have another care free, laid back, no doubt excellent sportsman amongst us!

Don't know about the carefree bit... this is my 18th straight day at work, but I could list a HEAP is issues I just don't give a shit about!

I don't think we'd really offend them... deep down, they know that we're the lucky country (... even if Septics think they are the only country in the world... and a big shoutout to our Yankee readers!), I don't think we'll be telling them anything new!

Hmm. Let's think about this for a minute, Teegstar.

1) 'Better' at what - cricket / gridiron / beer-drinking / petrol consumption / treatment of asylum seekers / adherence to the Kyoto protocol / foreign aid / indigenous rights? Or physically / mentally / culturally superior? And 'better' than whom - America / Switzerland / Taiwan / Venezuela / Vanuatu / Ukraine? How much do you know about everywhere that Australia is supposedly 'better' than?

2) Consider the likely reaction to a British person who had said this. ('You still think you rule the waves.') Or an American. ('You act like you have a God-given right to run the planet.') Or a German. ('Didn't you learn anything from the 20th century?') You may not mean anything sinister by your comment, but that's exactly how racism feeds - it starts off with a bit of lazy thinking, and before you know it Asian stores in Perth are getting firebombed.

And rightly so - the appropriate level of outrage has been displayed by our fair and reasonable general populace.

Your first point made me laugh, are you this anally retentive in real life? or are you just a disgruntled New Zealander??? Take a chill pill mate!!! We are all friends here, and innocently joking about how we are better than everyone else, doesn't indicate who we are better than... Australians don't discriminate who we are better than, we are just better than everyone ok?

This is partiotism, not racism... My Asian next door neigbour is as Aussie as me, and he is also better than everyone else

Because of heritage... They are still at the pub with us cheering the national side on.... I was drunk on Saturday night, on the way to the club in the taxi, and my Indian Taxi Driver was singing the Australian national anthem with me in the car as Thorpie got presented with his Gold medal...

I realise the pedantic of you out there will say that I am inadvertantly racist because I call him my 'Asian' neighbour... yet by the same token, if I dont recognise and respect his heritage, I am 'un-cultured'

The simple fact of the matter is that this is a blog, some people over-analyse and I sleep well at night.

Personally, I think we are touching on what really makes being Australian great...

1. You don't have to be "White" to be an Aussie (... i'm not fully White anyways!),

2. You can say what ever the hell you want, you don't have to be "PC" about anything,

3. If I disagree with you... I can tell you so,

4. If you disagree with me, I won't be offended (... it's not my fault you are wrong!), and finally,

5. Population 20 million... SECOND in the Olympic medal Tally! Take that, rest of the world!

Are you trying to be funny? because I am laughing hysterically!!! Just be proud of fosters and meat pies. Australia also has one of the top 10 red wines of all time... just in case you are one of those 'classy' Aussies

If you aren't an Aussie, then I dont know what you are doing here... If you are an Aussie, you obviously aren't a proud one... in which case, I pity you. Get over the problems of the past, and help us make a better future!!!

I was merely implying that you only purpose for continually replying to this thread was to bait Aussies... and it seems to be working... if you would like to clarify, I leave you this window of oppurtunity - I am sorry If I am wrong... heck, If I wasn't an Aussie, I would be all over this thread, basking in the obvious glory that is eminating from it... however, something tells me, that is not te reason you are here...

Sorry... just blinded by patriotism... The only person who can say my country is crap is me

And it is a sensitive nerve, because I love my coutry too much... if ever there is relevance to the saying 'blinded by love' you can associate it with my patriotism!!!

I know Australia has commited a lot of deeds that are quite shameful, but it's in the past, and we have no way of developing as a coutry with our own indentity if we worry about what past generations did, rather than focussing what we are doing...

Muggaz, I know what you mean. If you can handle the analogy, John Lennon once said something similar about the Beatles, along these lines: 'I can say I hate the ****ing Beatles, but when I hear Mick Jagger saying it, that's fighting talk.'

The journalist John Pilger gets a lot of flak for being supposedly un-Australian, because he is critical of things done and said in the name of the country. However, I remember a great review of his book 'A Secret Country' which refuted this, proclaiming him a true patriot in that he loves his country and isn't prepared to ignore its shortcomings. I guess it's the danger of that old British(?) 'My country right or wrong' attitude that scares me.

Whatever, like I said, I certainly didn't mean to rain on your parade.

Let's hope there's a big scandal about Chinese and Russian gymnasts and the American track and field athletes, cos then we might have a good chance of coming number 1 in the tally!

I think there IS a scandal about the American Track and Field team... and the Chinese and Russian athletes (... in ALL Sports!) looked doped to the max (...OK, yes it is a HUGE generalism!)... the truth will come out!

Just don't mention the Aust. Cycling team...
