MOO 3 slips to < 2 stars at amazon

I'm sure i'm not the only MOO fan who sees MOO 3's failure as a very sad thing. I was over at amazon and saw that the average rating had slipped to under 2 stars. That's the first PC game I've ever seen do that there. I hope they can patch it to being a decent game. The data patch helps the ai some but doesn't resolve the fundamental problems with it. sigh.

Hrmmm...

For a lot of us, or at least myself, we started out with games like MoO and StarControl2 and loved them. Coupla years later and the games get bigger and bigger and then we see MoO2 and StarCon3 come out and we heard of the size of the games and we think "Holy Cow, if MoO1 and StarCon2 were what someone can do with less than 10mb how much better, more in-depth these 400+mb games must be!?" And what did we get?

We got crap with pretty pictures. And most of us didn't even think the puppets of StarCon3 were very pretty. Its like the game companies got all hyped up on the new graphics tech, and paying for it, and they totaly forgot about something that has shone to be much more important, the mechanics and story of the game.

Bahh, now I'm feeling old and reactionary. Ack.

Well, I can't say as I've played either MoO3 or GalCiv, mainly because the PX has no plans on getting MoO3 in and I can't get my download of GalCiv to unlock, but from what I am hearing this sounds like something worth playing. If its not, I can always go back to pestering Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III and the Toys For Bob people for another StarCon game and leave you nice people alone.

I was very fortuneate to have played Gal Civ I on OS/2. Even at that time, it blew the socks off every game of its genre. Then the demise of OS/2 had me trying out MOO2 and I liked it but I thought it was too easy. The one thing I immediately noticed with CalCivIII (for me it's the 3rd version) is that I had to throw away all I knew about MOO. In MOO, the further you went into the game, the more you micromanaged. You settled a new planet in the late stages of a game and you had to build every friggin project. You can't do that in GalCivIII. It requires alot of thought of what you want from a planet.

My .02 worth. Having MOO3 made GalCiv even more enjoyable!!

too bad, so sad. To paraphrase the Electric Light Orchestra:
"They made the wine, they can drink the stuff."

I picked up my copy of Galciv at an EB. I asked the guy how sales were for Galciv, and he responded "Good. All those people who bought MOO3 are back for Galciv because they've stopped playing MOO3."

I don't understand any of this. Loving GalCiv and loving MOO3 are not mutually exclusive. Are they?? I play and love both of these games; disliking one doesn't automatically make the other one better. It's a huma trait; eg people are happy with their pay till they find out someone gets paid more. ;)

"Now let us never speak of it again.". At least, NOT HERE. Let's enjoy Galciv. I bought MOO3 (as a matter of fact, Brad also plays many Strategic games himself, we can see that in his response in several threads, including MOO2/3), was disappointed like many, but that is a fact of life. Now that we have Galciv it soesn't matter to me, things to be said about MOO3 belong in the MOO3 forums, not here.
