How Do You Read JoeUser?

Someone was recently expressing concern about how much exposure their bog site gets on JU, and it got me thinking about how people read other blogs.

I can think of a few ways for your site to get exposure

1. Your article shows up in the "Recent JoeUser Articles", and people access it from there.
2. Your article gets a comment that pushes it to the top of the "Recent Forum Posts".
3. Brad makes your article a "Featured JoeUser Article", and this can get you a lot of exposure.
4. You build a loyal following of readers who visit your blog site on a regular basis.
5. Other bloggers link to your blog site on theirs, so that their visitors may jump over to your site.
6. People like a comment you make on someone else's article and decide to check you out.
7. People access the "more..." for "Recent JoeUser Articles" or "Recent Forum Posts" and see a more comprehensive list of what's been posted recently.

Typically, when I log on I check out the "Recent Forum Posts" first, since they tend to change the quickest. Then I check out the "Recent JoeUser Articles". Then the featured articles. Then some of my favorite blogs. At each stage I do a refresh to see what has popped up in the forums. And then if I have run out of things to read, and can't think of anything to write, I will check the more comprehensive lists for articles and forum posts.

I usually go right down the right side and open up any stories that look intriguing (in a new tab, with Mozilla /shameless plug). Then I just troll around, usually get pissed off at someone's article, and leave.

I go to my own blog first, check on it, post my daily stuff, then check everything on my watch list. After that, I click on the "Recent JU Articles", and find the article where I left off....then I read anything that looks interesting, or anything that's written by certain bloggers I like to keep up with.

I generally follow the same pattern as you, and I try to at least read the majority of the articles. For the most part though, I'm not interested in people's daily journal stuff. I find it akin to watching a 'reality' show. The articles I tend to like, even if I don't comment on them, are the ones that are written off the cuff, and of no particular subject in mind. I read the political articles, but generally don't have the desire to get involved in lengthy discussions unless it's something that really lights a fire under my ass.

I do the same, But I normally go to CS's blog before I look at the "Recent JU Articles" ... lol

Sometimes I will go to the blog index, select a letter and then user name at random and go and check someones site....it's been interesting a couple of times. I also realise how many sites out there dont get used.

That's a good policy I think. From time to time I try to scroll down far enough to see the list of newest blog sites and give a few of them a read.

I check my page first. I look for comments and usually answer any new comments first. I then post new material (if I have anything to post at the time). Then I check the blogs in my read list and also check the comments on those sites for anything new there. I then look over the recent JU articles/forum posts, but usually don't go beyond what's in the most recent list on the left or right of the page. I then move down and check the featured/top articles list. Lastly, I look at my referrals... I only recently started to have anything on this part of the page, so I check and see what people are searching for when they hit my page.

Odd, but I usually forget to do that, and so I may think of it in the middle of my routine. I didn't even think of including it in my routine above.

Ok when i come on I usually fist check out recent forum posts. Then I check posts on my blog, read what people have to say. Then I got to recent articles. Then I do my favourite blogs, I usually read them in the same order, I don't know why. They I check the recent articles and posts again. Then I may go on my blog and respond to people and write something. I try and check out the new blogs on a regular basis, and it is amazing how many blogs aren't even used!

I kind of roam around here in the same way I float along through life - look after my stuff first, of course, then see where the wind takes me. I check up on my 'friends' (or favourite bloggers) but not in any structured way. I sometimes shock myself that I have left someone unattended for quite some time and then berate myself for my laziness and lack of attention.

I generally just read the new posts that look interesting to me - and it's amazing how you can know who's blog it is just by looking at the title! That freaked me out. I keep away from politics as a) I find it tedious b) I'm not American and c) those guys bite! Do not disturb the beasts. My favourite blogs are people's life stories - not the day to day 'I got up and had some toast and then I say Billy and he looked really cute so I giggled' crap - but the actually stories. The things we'd tell someone we were getting to know, which were poignant and have formed us as a person. I think the way they are communicated says a lot about the person.
