Thanks, son. I feel very backward when it comes to this blogging media. I see how others put someone's quotes in a block (mostly yellow) and I wonder, "How did they do that?" I love computing but I have still so much to learn. So little time.

Well, what I do is put the Link next to the text that I really want to represent the link, then after I submit I edit the article/comment and cut and paste the text over the word Link in the anchor.

C S Guy, Ahem...you have to be more specific. How do you put "the Link" next to the text? This is Greek to me, but thanks for taking the time to try to help.

I don't use the JU WYSIWYG because it doesn't work on my Mac! I use a dedicated HTML editor to write my articles and am proficient enough in HTML to type it on the fly for my comments.

Gene Nash, Thanks but that did not work. I don't even know how you get that yellow box in there. OH, never mind. I get along ok just using my simple skills...yet I am more than willing to learn more.

For example... if I wanted the text greywar to be a link to his blog, I would do the following:

This is greywar's (now at this point i would click on the Link button on the toolbar, mine is after Image and before Email, then enter the URL for the link in the dialog that pops up, and click ok.) blog site.

That will put the link code after "greywar's". After I submit the article/comment I would select Edit. There the actual HTML is shown, and look for the anchor (less-than-sign a, closed by a greater-than-sign). In the anchor will be the word "Link". Cut "greywar's" from before the anchor, and replace "Link" with it.

It worked.

The yellow box is inserted by JU when it sees the "[quote] (insert quoted text here) [/quote]" -- It automatically inserts the code for the yellow box where the JU "quote" tag is. So type (without the quotemarks), "[quote] " followed by the text you want to quote, followed by, "[/quote]" Easy.

(That all is assuming the WYSIWYG "select text and press the 'Q' graphic" doesn't work for you to automatically insert it in the text editing area. That doesn't work for me, but it's not built for my platform. So I have to type it by hand.)

This only works until you are a power user or higher and then damn parser stops reading the HTML.

Maybe I should be glad I'm not a power user?

I do have that problem with my handtyped HTML in comments. Usually, though, I can just click "edit" and retype what got cut out and it works fine. Does that work with the articles? Clicking "edit" and repasting the original text?

If not I think I'll be happy to stay a lowly citizen. I need my HTML editor.

greywar: I use HTML in all my posts, and have no problems. I had a lot of problems with the editor, but I think it is an Active X control, isn't it?

Try Firefox or another browser. Once I stopped using IE I stopped having trouble here.

Try using the full screen editor instead of the box on the page.  It's the second button from the right on the editor.

Also, the <> button takes you into HTML mode

If you want spell check, www.iespell.com offers one that works in HTML mode.  Just a tip with that one, it needs to check twice before it actually changes the spelling.

Baker - it may well be an IE issue with the editor but if it is it should be reported nonetheless as it is the most commonly used browser by far.

Karma - I have Atlantis Open Mind to deal with the spelling issue and I will try those suggestions. Editing in fact seems to make the editor "half-parse" the HTML with a bunch of glaring errors after it finishes. I will try the full screen job tonight perhaps and get back to you. it must be browser related.  i just recently upgraded from ie5 to ie5.5 (i prefer to stay several years behind the ms edge in order to avoid surprises hahahah)   i can now see and utilize all the stuff shown in the first graphic below when adding a comment or making a new post.

using ie5, i would see only those toolbar options to which im limited using opera 7.52 (image below).  its also what im seeing using firefox 1.7: 2004062622

also only a few of the options actually worked. thats why i used to quote in Strong or Bold...the Quote javascript wouldnt/doesnt work even though i have no problems with javascript anywhere else using any of those three browsers (ie5, opera, firefox).

I don't think it's IE version specific, however, as grey would see the upper graphic with his log-in, and I would see the lower with mine, ON THE SAME MACHINE! (I feel like I just told a ghost story.) The only difference between our log-ins is the level (He is 3, I am 1) and perhaps some hidden preferences? Hmm...

Interesting. I'm using IE 5.0 (for Mac) and my comment box looks like Kingbee's second graphic. I never knew there was more!

To be honest, and no disrespect to JU, but I hate the more powerful editor. I mean REALLY hate it. I don't get along with much that is WYSIWYG, though. Whenever I use IE and have to use the editor here I get double line breaks and most everything I do has to be redone. Is probably me being inept, but I switched to Firefox so I wouldn't have to bother with it. I wish it was something you could opt-off.

IE 5.0 (for Mac)

i believe ie5 for mac was released about the same time as ie5.5 for windows

the 2nd graphic is identical to what i saw with ie 5, opera 7.52 and the most recent build of firefox. if its not browser-related (at least at the lower user levels), perhaps its some kind of javascript anomaly specific to ie? in ie5 id get a javascript error alert that i no longer see with 5.5.

Really, I thought JU had just changed somewhat and added new features.  Also how do you get rid of double line breaks on JU ?

Gene, you are at a level 1, so you wouldn't see the extra toolbar.  (Only level 2 and higher see it)

To get a single return instead of a double, press "shift" and "enter" together.
