Music : Crash / No Music : works fine

Hi there,

I think I'm not the only one having this problem.
I just got the game and I can't play more than a few minutes (basically after 1st research is done) : the game crashes and I have to press CRTL+ALT+SUP to come back to windows.

Installing the patch and bonus pack doesn't change anything.

I read on news.stardock.com that turning off the music solve the issue, and that's right.

But I want to play with music turned on !!!!

Anyone know a solution ?

My config is :
XP 1800+
512 Ram
Geforce 3
Win XP

Everything else works fine...

Many thanks in advance !

yeah I thought about it but it's not as great
if the probmen is known, then why isn't it fixed yet ?
will it be the case with an incoming patch ?
I really hope so !!!

The only problems with sound have been reported with SB cards, has something to do with the drivers to overrule Galciv sound settings. SB cards produce great sound but have terrible drivers. I'm not sure if you can solve this, but if there is a way you can bet Brad c.s. are working on it.

Yea i have lots of problems with my SBlaster on other games. Its generally accepted the Drivers are appalling. This reminds me to go out and buy a new spanking non Creative soundcard :D

Actually, I had the exact same problem, and I DO NOT have a SB sound card. I have a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (most recent drivers). The game was literally freezing every 10-15 minutes or so, at least half-a-dozen times, and when I saw that turning off the music would prevent the game from freezing, I went ahead and killed the music. I haven't had a single crash since then. It is frustrating, since I would like to at least hear what the music sounds like.

I have a SB Live Gamer with current drivers installed and have the sound skip problem. This is the only game that I have ever had any problems with the sound with. Other than GalCiv my sound system is very solid.

I must confess that in more than 10 years of using sound blasters (actually after my adlib I always bought a sound blaster product) I never had any sound problem.
And I really think the drivers (updated quite often on creative.com) are pretty well done.

So dear dev team, please solve this issue as soon as you can !!!

Do you guys ALL have SB sound cards? I know I had some problems with games running with my SB Live Platinum under ME. Took me alot of time to correct it, but it is possible, so maybe I can help.

I have Hercules Fortissimo III.
With music game _always_ freezes after new science discovery movie, often when quiting diplomacy screen, it can freeze when i start game, hear music for few minutes and push 'Quit' button.
With disabled music it is the most stable game, I;ve ever played.

Anytime the crash has something to do with cutscenes, it is almost sure it has something to do with your soundcard and/or videocard. And maybe even with your windows version. As I said, I had problems under ME with the SB card. And it can also have to do with your system specs, what processor, how much internal mem etc. I had some games playing fine with sound disabled, and it turned out with sound enabled on my system was not working because my system couldn't handle it. So IT IS difficult to say upfront what is causing the problems. Perhaps you (free) DL SmartException from Stardock Central and if the game crashes you can publish the log created by this programme in the Bugs Reports Thread. SDC will certainly look into it than. Or email it to them.

We have code that should fix this problem. I'm not sure if it will make it into the next update because we haven't had the full team testing it since the code was implemented.

If your problem is due to another program having overwritten Microsoft's codecs, this link should help:

http://www.stardock.com/files/ms_mp3codec.exe

Otherwise, you'll have to wait for the update. But it won't be much longer.

Thanks for the update.

Is it safe to assume that we can just install the codex or is there a test to see if it is even necessary to do so?
