Talk about different playing styles huh?
I remember going to "normal" level and I used to keep all my taxes even through the game and get wiped out and just amazed how difficult it was. I learned and fine-tuned my skills and now I look back and remember when I used to have all my tech balanced even if the situation didn't call for it, or lopsided like, having my research way ahead of my social buildings so even my best planet would get 10-15 buildings behind my research... you soon learn about timing, balance, when you need military, when you need social production, etc. You learn what tech is useful early, and what's not.
What a wonderful game of strategy. The more you play, the more enjoyable it becomes as you begin to learn how to juggle and get that tiny bit better.
Oh, looking back to my first few games just gives me a laugh at how much I didn't know how much the game has to offer.
