cloaked ships?

OK, so apparently Ranger and Phoenix are invisible in some way. But how exactly does it work? Are they visible, but from a smaller distance? Not visible at all? As much as I love this game, sometimes it just doesn't give the player enough information. Or maybe I'm missing something?

I dunno. I can certainly see the enemy Rangers coming.

I double checked to be sure, and the Ranger technology description reads:

"Invisible battleships, an almost unfair advantage."

Since Rangers are weaker than Dreadnoughts, it would be nice if they were (at least partially) invisible.

Yeah I would like to know this too. Last time the Drengins had invisible Dreadnoughts, but not all of them. How does it work?

I believe it means that you cannot see them once they have left your sensor range.

Normally you can see any ships that have ever been in sensor range, while they are places you have previously explored.

Well that would make sense, but I've been attacked by invisible ships. So they were definitely within sensor range. Also, they DO show up on the minimap but are invisible on the main map.

I've had MY ships (transports & dreadnoughts) go invisible on occasion - the game seems to lose the link to the icon.

Try saving & reloading just in case.

I have also been attacked by invisible ships, one was damaged and all i could see was the eltricity damage animation moving around. I thought this was that cloaked ship thingy though.

You mean you can still see ships after they leave your sensor range (except for maybe the invisible thing that this thread is about)? How long can you see them, for the rest of the game? What is the ponit of having a fog of war or sensor ranges at all if this is true. Ugh.

IMHO cloaking could be one of the following two things:

1. only affects the AI in that they no longer will pursue a ship that has left sensor range ( currently they will go to the "last known position" ).

2. a feature that was never implemented.

btw, by "currently they will go to the last known position", i meant that is the default AI behaviour without cloaking tech.

i think i've won every game i've played without ever using cloaked ships, so i haven't really made any observations.

and no, you can't see ships outside of sensor range. but you can, for some strange reason, see what ships are orbiting a planet no matter how far away they are.
