Population

Hi, im quite new to this game so there is quite a bit i dont understand, the majour one is population. I had played and won a "huge" map with 2 normal and 3 semi mormal races and now im playing the biggest map type.

In my last game, my population was #1 in the galaxy throughout the whole game but in this new game its been #6 since the start. I have battle cruisers already and i have no more than 500mil on any planet! Whats going on? in my other game, by this time my best planet had like 5 billion +!

is it because:

my tax rate has been at 70%?

I have made many evil choices?

I have colonised around 3 dozen star systems this early in the game?

Is it any of these? I am begining to think its the taxes because after i lowered it to 50% the pop is starting to rise a bit, however now my moral is at 99% and it seems like an awfull waste of tax money. Im mainly worryed about my population because although i totaly own the other civs in battle and iv blocaded all the dergain planets, I DONT HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE TO LOAD INTO THE TRANSPORTS!

anyone knows what may be goin on? :notsure:

Hi Freelancer101,

Yes the problem you are experiencing is due to the tax issues most likely. In order to make your people happy, they will want lower taxes to keep money for themselves. ;) Keep them at 33% or below to make them happy as possible. Only time you can jack it up is during the colonization phase. ;)

Evil choices can have reprocussions in your game when you meet other races. In order to maintain your evil ways you would need to research some evil techs that only Evil races can see.

If you colonize worlds that are not 15 or above this also will prevent you from growing to your full potential.

If you want more one on one help visit NeoTech Gaming Network: http://www.neotechgaming.com we support Galciv and expansion, Space Empires, Star Fury and Civ3 (the last one is not supported real well)

We have a lot of good players and some of excellent Mod Designers who have made their home at NeoTech. Good luck I hope I helped you out a little bit at least. :D

Most Likely

nope (but they do start out with a small group and it takes a little longer to grow)
I have made many evil choices?

definately not.. evil is the way to go..
problems? everyone 'loves' me since im evil.. or is it fear... as long as they pay me :)

Your poplulation growth rate (from what I know) is influenced by your morale. If its under 50ish it goes down.. between 50 and 60 its up and down.. and if thye love you they love each other... Also the population techs (+10% etc) help a bit

and everything he said :0

just wait for those gigantic games where your planets hit the max pop :)

I will not dispute the evil way of playing. I have only went evil a few times myself. It did seem to provide more points going evil, just seems that all races turn against you. :p

You explained it much better then I did thanks. Of course you are obviously a much better player then I am judging from your medals. :D

Check this thread http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GS&id=155077#155887. There is an explanation about population growth. To summarize the post: to have a great increase of population, you need to keep 100% morale until you reach enough people on a planet, and this number depends on your growth bonus.

BTW, you can raise morale on a planet by using propaganda (detail button on the planetry screen). Sure it cost money, but if you get more money by keeping a high taxes rate than you must spend in propaganda, it is a good choice.

medals schmedals.. yours was good :) plus we practically posted at the same time lol.

Interesting strategy Peace Phoenix. Destablization your talking about right? This is what I love about Galciv there are so many ways to play the game.

Medals schmedals LOL I did not notice until you said something Hegetaga! We did post at about the same time. :p

Well, I use propaganda to raise morale. I don't know is someone is trying to destablize me.

Not destabalization..

Go to a planet and click on the info button on the bottom left i thin it is.. then it displays info on that planet.. bonuses etc.. and there is a slide bar for propaganda

What about the maximum capacity of planets? Is there any limit of maximum population per planet? How to check it?
I am pretty sure that the max population is 100,000.

I have played a lot of games and I have only seen this limit reached a very few times and it has always been by one of the minor AI that I just culturally flipped.

The only time I use propaganda to raise my moral is if the morale is at a critical level like below 25. Other wise I try to rush build/buy something that will raise the morale.

One way to know if you are being destablized (I think) is to be spying on the other AI.

Having said that I will state now that I never use spying or destabilization because I consider it a waste of money that I can better put to my own resources.

I think that destabilization against you only work if your morale is low. I work to keep my morale above 54% right from the begining of a game.

I did not know about that.. Thanks Hegetaga nice tip!!! :D

Is this the same for all planets (some of them are smaller and some of them are bigger)?

Same for all - some of course may never get their because they don't have a big enough PQ, etc., but the max is the same for all - physical size is a visulization only issue as far as I can tell.

Its been awhile since I have had reached the 100,000 mark. Definately a few versions ago.

200,000 must be the level for the new versions.

Planet Quality does not affect the population cap. Poplulation on a planet is affected by morale. It may not be possible to get to the pop cap because the morale is low.

Yes, but morale is affected by PQ, I think. That is everytime in the start up game period, when I increase the planet PQ by soil enrichment, etc., the morality goes form 50-70 up to 100.

I believe "morale" to be a synonym for "population cap". ("Morale +10%" in effect means "you'll get 10% more population without doing anything else").

And I believe PQ simply affects a planet's base morale level.

I agree with your statements but there are other things like social buildings that can affect morale as well. Also there are morale modifies in anomalies and events.

I look at that differently but I guess it works out to the same thing. The way I see Morale +10% is I don't have to work as hard to keeping my citizens happy and producing.

I didnt know max was now 200billion..

i believe it does. becaus the higher it is the more of a paradise the planet it. so there happier.

and spying is very usefull.. cause in the later (and earlier stages sometimes) your spies gain techs from thsoe races and when your evil and dont have access to good techs you get those sometimes :)

if you put jsut a little spying into each civ as soon as you see them, you'll get results.it'll be very pointless until near the end of the middle game, but then you'll be getting one or two techs from them a year, maybe more depending on how much you spend. near the end of the game, you can completely stop funding research to focus on military/social, and depend on the spies to get you your techs. granted you can only get techs other civs have, but that also lets you spend more time on researching the big important ones they don't have yet.

Thanks guys all great tips some I never heard of.. It was not my thread but thanks anyways. LOL

Wrong. Morale +10% means that your planet morale is greater (I don't have the exact formula). It is the empire level population growth bonus that have an impact on population. And, as the post I was refering to at #4 said, the growth bonus is a bonus on the population growth, not on the population of a planet.
But there is a cap about the population growth per turn: it is 200 Millions. So at a certain population per planet, 100% morale is no longer required for maximum pop growth.

morale is affected by PQ, I think.
End of quote

Yes, the PQ of a planet is important to determine the base morale of a planet, before any modifier from taxes, imporvement, empire bonus is applied. The bigger the planet, the better the morale for the smae number of people since there is much less overcrowding on a high PQ planet.

Yes, there are some benefits from spending enough money into spying:
- you can avoid some very nasty events
- you can see the what are the empire wide bonus of the others Civ
- you can see their trade and konw their trade partner. Useful is you want to have them fighting their trade partnr and disrupting their economy in the process
- you can know what tech they are researching. That can help you with the research you want conduct
- steal tech.
Peace Phoenix, I have never been able to steal techs. I only have seen the minors do it? I usually spy until I can see all their stats and stop. I assume you must keep it going longer? Thanks for the tips I am missing a large part of the strategy of the game. ;)
