Total modding

Is it possible?

At the moment, all the mods seem to involve changing the normal game files. Is there a way to get the game to use an entirely different set directories to load all the game from, like Quake or Half-life?

I'm not planning on doing a total mod (too much like work), but I would like to be able to keep a "clean" copy of the game, and only add mods to a different version that I could play if I wanted to.

It is doable. I expect Stardock will make such a utility since it would be very easy for an outside programer to do it. They made the game very MODable on purpose; extended game life and interest.

Currently I keep a backup of the files I have changed in simular directory structure. As well as a copy of the MODed files in another back up. Then before an update copy over the Gal Civ files with my backup of original files. that way SC will update everything. After the update i simply copy over GalCiv directory with my current MOD configuration. Not as hard as it sounds. ;)

I am expecting a ton of mods over the next few months. Try swapping out some \Event Music files yourself. You might get hooked by the modding bug yourself. LOL
