Uni prom tonight. All of the people on my course, the sight of us all dressed to the nines. Acting confident, "Yeh I'm da man" but really being driven by the undercurrent of pheromones, gathering in herds searching for a mate. The awkward first hour before the "dutch courage" kicks in and people start talking and reminiscing of all the fun times we have had together. Most of us will not ever see each other again after this year but it doesn't matter. For this one night, full of glittering people, who have grown together, cried together, laughed together will live forever in my mind.
Will I see Emily I wonder? The girl of dreams, when she was stressed and crying I was her shoulder to cry on, always her tower of strength who helped her keep on going. When I cried for the first time in a long time, did she think me a weak man? No. She cuddled me and cared for me, in that moment I think I really understood the two-way nature of friendship for the first time. Neither of us has mentioned it since but we both know that that special bond is there. Not lovers, "merely" mutual understanding and respect for each others qualities. We will always be friends and I want to remember her as she will look tonight, a shining beacon of what it means to be human.
