Freighter Pathing

When a trade route is established do Freighters *always* take the most direct route to and from their starting/destination planets?

Or do they sometimes take a 1 sector adjacent detour if there is a Starbase with a trading module built on it?

I've had my freighters take one route through sectors but take another on the way back.

Always go as the crow flies in my experience

I think the ship pathfinding always moves diagonally first until it is directly above/to the side of the destination, then it moves vertically/horizontally. The net effect is your freighter will usually take one path going and a different path leaving like so:

Which would mean that making strings of trade starbases are highly inefficient. Or does the little freighter adjust its course if there are stations?
It's too hard to follow these little white dots from turn to turn...
