I just finished re-reading one of the greatest graphic novels of all time – and for that matter maybe one of the greatest pieces of literature.
Background: In 1986 Allan Moore and Dave Gibbons broke every single rule to making comic books. I mean it. They didn’t stop for anything. A twelve issue run that lasted from 1986-87, and was published by DC Comics. You can pick it up in paperback at any fine bookstore.
Let me tell you why this is amazing:
1. Alan Moore is a genius.
2. Dave Gibbons can draw the pants off of anyone. And he can take Alan Moore’s INSANE scripts, and make beautiful presentations from them. Very tight, and very specific. He draws a little, but says a lot.
3. It was written during a time where Comics were in slowly going the way of the buffalo.
4. It, along with “Batman, the Dark Knight Returns,” literally changed the way we read comics today.
5. I could go on and on about this book, (in fact I was going to, but have decided against it) but don’t take my word for it! [insert reading rainbow noise]
