I want to love this game but I suck!! :(

I'm mostly an action gamer or MMOs but I play pretty much anything that isn't a sports game. My problem with this type of game though is that I'm too new to it and I hate doing something I'm rubish at :(
Any game i play (Vs AI cause i'd get owned multiplayer) i end up reading tool tips more than i am playing and feel i don't know half of what is going on. I end up starting so slowly, capping so few planets at the start that I'm on the back foot and don't have the ability to recover. And yes I've done the tutorials.
I've tried the manual but is there a complete newbies strategy guide or some replays people would recommend on how to start a game off and ways to protect your planets because I have enjoyed this game but i'm quickly losing heart.

Try a medium size map 2 vs. 2, lock teams choose the hard AI for your partner and choose the easy AI for the opponents. You'll win, and you'll be learning at the same time. Then progess up to more difficult challenges.

What I did to learn the game was make a large random map without pirates against 1 easy researching AI. That let me expand at my leisure and read all the tooltips. The next game I was able to win a 1v1 against a normal AI. You might also start on a slow gameplay setting. I do this with all new RTS's and it helps you learn much more quickly than playing a campaign.

Great idea ! That's precisely what I do when trying to learn any type of RTS games. It allows me to feel less under pressure.

Also, pause is your friend in non-multiplayer matches. Hit the pause/break button on your keyboard, and read tooltips at your leisure.

Have a single player game on your own, no ai, learn the stats, learn the skill trees, move up to games against the ai then mp.

Yep. That's what I did (except I set all AI to "Easy"). It helps to have an ally watching your back, and you can watch the AI player for tips on how to play.

And as someone mentioned, don't be afraid to pause the game whenever you start to feel overwhelmed. Then you'll have all the time you need to get a grasp on things.

I have not tried this yet on Sins: What I do on some RTS games is to set up three teams (2v1v1), so that I have a partner and our opponents are at war with each other also.
