Micro manage the Advent ?

I have read several post about the Advent. They say similar "Use this ship with the other ship and watch the magic. Below is an example.

"Animosity (Radiance battleship) to make a bunch of things attack it, and then Vengeance from the Rapture (to make all attacking ships take damage in return). Works even better when coupled with the Mothership's shield recharge, and if the Radiance has a rank or two in its passive ability that grants it armor and converts damage to antimatter, to keep feeding Animosity. "

My question is, do you have to micromanage Advent ships to work their magic? Are these ships spellcasters that require keystrokes from me to make them work? Or does the computer AI handle the special powers for me.

Yes and no. Some ships handle themselves astonishing well, while others, incase I may say so, act as if they listened to the Unity propaganda for a tad too long.
As an example I noticed Iconus Guardians doing their job quite well without me having to look for them all too much (just checking that they don't sleep on the job every now and than), While the Mothership didn't even think about casting the shield restore ability when 5 ships were sitting next to it with 0 shields.
But in general the AI acts quite good without you having to babysit every single ship. Once you get to know your usual problem ships you handle them in a reflex.
The Magic you describe is working it on a good combination rather than the babysitting the abilities.

I prefer to micromanage the offensive abilities. Things like Telekinetic Push, Cleansing Brilliance and Animosity I like to always make sure are not on Autocast. The AI doesn't always know when the best time to use the abilities, or what the best target is (don't need to use the Push when only a couple ships are around, or Cleansing Brilliance on a damaged Frigate). Using some abilities together, Animosity from the Progenitor Mothership and Cleansing Brilliance from the Radiance Battleship for example is a favorite of mine against a lot of light ships, it requires a human to time it, but it if successful a swarm of Light Frigates can melt away.

Leaving some abilities on Autocast can also end up having the AI eat through your ship's Antimatter very fast, which can be a major problem for the Advent since their abilities make most of their capital ships. This is especially true with the Mothership, the AI is usually smart at using the Shield Restore, but the Progenitor Mothership is very important in keeping an Advent fleet together, so you might not want to risk the AI handling it.

So it really mostly depends on the ship and the ability. Some you really should watch and manage, especially if Anti-Matter is a concern while others you can more or less leave to themselves and they'll handle themselves.

Ive noticed that Radiance Battleships will autocast their "taunt" ability, dont remember the name offhand, whenever anything enters weapons range. Unfortunately this means that the majority of the time only one or two ships will be in range, instead of the entire enemy fleet. Also at lower levels there is a pretty good chance that NOTHING will be in the abilities range.

Generally speaking though its a good idea to keep an eye on all your Cap ships in the heat of battle, pausing when necesary to switch through them all and activate anything that should be activated.

Thanks guys. This helps.

How do you prevent the ships from autocasting? Is there a menu option I have to click on?

Just right click the ability. You can see when the rotating circle is up on an icon that it is autocasting. Another important note is to disable autocast on colonize incase you ever take it on a Mothership. It sucks incase it colonizes a planet out of stupidity while still 389473979 siege frigates of your enemy are around that can blast the planet back to oblivion.

When you hover over the ability it will tell you if it's set to Autocast or not.

If you right click while you're hovering over the ability, it will toggle it on/off, depending on what it is set to (different abilities are on Autocast or not by default).

It's also usually a good idea to set your initial scouts to Auto-Explore by doing this, right clicking on the ability, and they go off without management and check out planets until something kills them.

I'm a slow typist, someone already answered.
