TEC Scenario: stalemate --> slow pillow suffocation

TEC Scenario: stalemate --> slow pillow suffocation

need advice on turning the tide..

Here's the scenario:
-map, tempest
-real estate owned, 1/4 to 1/3 of star system
-strong trade routes, but i spend it as fast as it comes
-ai opponents (1 tec, 1 advent)
-4 to 5 frontlines =< 1 jump from a fleet
-3 fleets (2-3 caps, usually a kol with an akkan or some other; at this point in game at least 2 fleets have 10-20 kodiaks, 15-25 lrms, some supports; sprinkle of basic frigs; not so many siege units)
-each frontline planet has some defense force (low end: 2 squadrons with some cannons, high: 10-14 squadrons with more cannons), but no planet shields or repair bays (from reading i get the impression these may make a difference)
-started making more flaks to bolster fleets
-most frontline planets have 1 jump inhibitor
-missle tech is maxed, laser/cannon is up there too, armor is almost max, shield tech is upper mid
-civic tech is standard, started pumping diplomacy, but dunno if its worth it, besides econ bonuses

PROBLEM:
-enemy has me consistently on the defensive, choosing to hit and run before taken heavy losses. im usually able to snag a few frigs and a cap ship before they jump, but they end up widdling my pop down and its affecting my income..
-i dont feel my planet forces are strong enough to leave and go on offensive, so i stay and tech. i feel like rome--over-extended. each aquisition, even asteroids, seem to create more liability and instability for maintaining empire (end up shuttling fleets back and forth to deal with attacks, while taking gradual losses

QUESTIONS:
1) how can i stabilize and be more offensive, before enemies gets too strong to defend against--> aforementioned pillow suffocation
2)is the novalith/deathstar weapon worth the investment? can it shoot past more than 1 gravwell?
3) is more than 1 jump inhibitor better/more effective?
4) is planet shield worth it?

basically, 5 hours into this debacle i refuse to lose--replaying from my last saved game (above).

please advise,
thanks

well, i tried last night to finish this game, but i think i was already too far behind.. i had to research bays, then tried planet shield.. didnt seem to make a difference with the two ai's decided to unofficially ally and attack me simulateously on three fronts.. one in which both showed up (one to crush my fleet.. the other to eff my infrastructure.

i will keep the game on file and go back to it once ive Sun Tzu'd the TEC.. can't wait. I really hate the ai in this one game.. the day WILL come when i jack-boot drop-kick their effing homeworlds!
------------------

on the lighter side, i started a new game and its going really well.. got the strongest ai as my ally and ive almost killed off one of the other ai's (map just under tempest.. 29 planet, single star).. all in under 2 hours (w00t for me!).

what i found to be key is scouting and choosing the expansion direction carefully (previous note of chokepoint control, thx), then rushing an ai core planet with some cobalts and a marza..

really fast assault fleet, and have good power, esp for sieging. careful about the life meter on the marza, it's a lot weaker than the kol..ALSO i think it helped that i targeted an advent ai early.. their shields seemed a lot weaker.

I bolstered this fleet with lrms, robotic cruisers(mill falcon look-a-like) and a few siege frigs..

LESSON to self: take the offensive early, target one ai specifically, maintain momentum while teching the crap out of civ production before moving to military.. best of both worlds really, rushing to buy time to tech up, esp the econ.. in starcraft i could only do one or the other effectively..

anyway, thx for the comments ppl.. they helped!

Slowly but sure i pulled ahead and took another planet last night...as far as i can tell the Armistice is manual. I got to use it again with the proper timing and the same thing happened...the took off...Oh i did make a mistake on who im fighting..not the Advent..its the Vasari that im dealing with.

Thats a good idea..I'll give thAt a shot...spent a better part of last night building my fleet back up from the previous battle...upped the cap and built more Caps..the second round went better as opposed to the previous night
