Carriers overpowered?

I found out that after you reach some critical mass of bombers in your fleet(20-30+)and some support you basically become unstoppable .Reason being that bombers cost nothing , fly very fast and 30 of them can kill any capital ship very fast. You attack basically as soon as you enter the well, while other ships have to travel to you first. Flak frigs or no flags it doesnt really matter -you take out caps in first minutes of a fight and you may lose some bombers which will regenerate anyway

I dont really see any other ship combination being nearly as powerfull as carrier fleet (missile frigs are nice in the beggining but thats about it).

1) After the initial "alpha strike", bombers get completely shredded by flaks. They'll be able to take out a ship or two, and then they'll lose their punch.

2) Even though it seems like they're "free", they're not. They cost antimatter to produce, and it takes quite a while to fill up a wing (they start with one bomber, and gradually fill up as more are produced).

3) In combination of 1) and 2), once you shred the first flight of bombers, the carrier fleet is a sitting duck because it can't produce them fast enough to matter.

I love these threads seriously. One guy says that Carriers are overpowered, the next guy says that Flak is too powerful vs fighters, following guys claims that LRM spam is sooooo powerful nothing else comes close. That is of course followed by a guy claiming he knows for a fact that all kodiak fleet is UNSTOPPABLE!

I think it's completely overpowered when I take a 100 ship fleet against a 5 ship fleet :(

Yeah I've only played a couple singleplayer games and it seems to me that the Kortul Devastator is overpowered but I haven't heard anyone complain about it. The game is just so well balanced thateverything seems powerful compared to something else.

I just dont see how the carrier is overpowered. If you have a decent fighter screen along with flak they usually get chewed up pretty well.

Funny, against the AI i find i can just ignore the "clouds" of bombers/fighters with few losses. Just have some flack frigates, and the flack burst from kol battle ships puts a real dent into their numbers.

It also appears that capitals(not counting special abilities)/heavy cruisers have limited anti fighter ability, or am i wrong?

Ironclad is overpowered, they released an extremely addictive game that completely dominates my time.

The only one I've found is a nearby friend with a baseball bat, to assist in "passing out" for sleep.

That's not true, at all. In almost no game will you find people who agree on what is imbalanced, partially because people who are USING the imbalance are going to, obviously, fight against it being fixed.

People said the same thing about World of Warcraft and Battlefield 2 - everyone thought something else was imbalanced. Did this mean that either game had great balance? Not at all - the fact is that BOTH games had atrocious balance in so many places it was difficult to place.

The mod Dystopia and Natural Selection had the same issues, and half the reason balance in both games ended so poorly was because people who abused the imbalance would deny it and try to claim something else was broken.

I'm not going to say that SoaSE has horrendous balance, but to make a blanket statement like that is just silly.

I personally feel that carriers are fine. They are so easy to pop and once the fighters/bombers are taken down by flak, they are no offensive abilities at all.

it will take you under 15-35 seconds (matters what direction its heading) to kill a level 10 cap (if the cap has no anti-fighter abilities) with 40 bombers, even if he has 35+ flaks the cap will die, then you can just kill a few buildings (most likely you can find a building away from the flaks) and retreat, greatest harassment method there is and makes many human opponents quit.

however an all out carrier fleet is not so good in direct battles (maybe why the guy in another thread was whining how his bombers died to flaks, clearly he had no micro at all), so combining them with some long range ships as anti frigates, flaks as anti bombers + anti long range ships and using those to pound the enemy fleet, while its chasing your bombers, works really well.

or theres one strat(race specific) that makes it so enemies can never damage your carriers (its not just making them run in circles), however I've never seen someone use it :).

The only thing I'm curious about... how does one defeat a Vasari battlegroup that has several Subverter cruisers keeping your fleet permanently disabled? I actually haven't seen this in action, but I've got a friend in a 5-way FFA game who thinks I'm building a massive carrier fleet, when it's really just a bunch of Enforcers and Subverters :D. Wondering what I should look out for in his fleet that could counteract the subverters.

VASARI FTW!!!! They're the ones to use for this in combination with some other essentials which I won't mention. Capital ship carriers FTW
