Any reason to take Cobalts over Garda?

Is there any reason to use Cobalt's over Garda's? Are auto-cannons just really bad versus ships as opposed to lasers?

Garda Flak Frigates = Good against fighters/bombers, but not much else. Please read the descriptions ;-)

build one or two Garda Flak Frigates in your fleet but I dont build them at all, unless it's needed badly.

Yes, but what kind of reduction are we talking about?

With the first two Laser upgrades and the first two Ballistics upgrades I end up with Cobalts doing 11 damage and Garda's doing 23. Do all ships other than fighters really take over 50% less damage from auto-cannons?

heres the info in spreadsheet format, anyway antiVeryLight is the damage type they do:

never noticed this, but LRM and the like take 100%

Garda's come in handy when your foe shows up at your doorstep with a fleet full of carriers and light carriers (I'm looking at YOU TEC/Advent players  X-( )

This game follows a traditional RTS format, it doesn't matter what the upgrades do it matters what damage type you're flagged as and what armor you're going against.

Specifically armor types. I know there is an armor medium value in the game and probably light , capital , and heavy or I would guess at the very least. The damage values are the same and correspond to a table stating what the *real* damage is.

That being said, the game seems to have soft counters not necessarily hard counters which makes it even more interesting.

So Knighty4, the only way to find out is to dissect the files that have the damage information, then compare and contrast and you'll know what reductions you're up against and what bonuses you are granted when fighting against a certain thing.
