Which AI provides the greatest challenge?

Howdy all. After thoroughly stomping the hard AI in multiple scenarios I am looking for a larger challenge. Am I stuck waiting for a Very Hard AI, or is one of the flavors of AI harder than the rest? I usually just pick random so I might be getting easy pulls. Thanks!

I usually play against a couple (or more) AI's that are locked on the same team for the most challenge.

Well I guess I meant, aggressive, guarded or technological (I think those are the 3 types). In Master of Orion the technological opponents and expansionists usually kicked butt. SoaSE doesn't have quite the breadth of AI options, but I thought there might be some agreement on which AI was the most difficult to overcome 1 on 1.

The AI isn't generally too hot in 1v1, especially on smaller maps.

I'm afraid I tend to play with random Hard AI, so I couldn't say which of the AI 'flavours' is toughest. I suspect a lot will depend on your style of play, as well.

I agree that AI isn't too good 1 vs 1 for any game. Like in most game the only way to have a 1v1 AI challenge would to give the AI a head start.

GalCivII manages to do it :)

GalCivII doesn't do it, I forget but after 3 or 4 difficulties above normal it doesn't get smarter the computer just cheats with bonuses to industry, money, and research to make it harder.

If you look at the customize AI option in galciv, on normal the AI is handicapped at 80% income. It's not until you go one higher that the comp equal to the player and the rest above are just cheating by a lot.

Economic is probably more deadly than Aggressor. Aggressor makes stupid attacks with 1 light frigate :/
