Good Bosses Are Hard To Find

I spoke with my boss this morning just to update him on my condition. It was a difficult conversation as my voice hasn't yet returned and I am croaking more than speaking. While I am starting to feel better I am not feeling up to getting out in the sub-zero weather and working.

He said to just keep resting, it's supposed to be a bit warmer tomorrow. He also said that he would swing by the hotel and take care of the bill, pick up my paperwork and take it in to the office for me, and drop off a fresh bottle of Nyquil as mine has just about one more dose left in it. How's that for a good boss?

When the weatherman said the temps were supposed to drop into the sub-zero range Saturday I went out and fired up the generator on my truck so it could keep the batteries charged and the engine block warm. It was still running when I went to sleep. Sunday morning I went out to check on it and the generator wasn't running. I don't know if the fuel gelled due to the extreme cold or the generator just decided to not run, but either way it was a bad thing. The truck wouldn't start as the batteries were too low due to the cold. The generator also wouldn't start. I suspect the fuel is gelled up.

The boss said it was too damn cold to worry about the truck right now and that we'd see what we could do about tomorrow when it warms up a bit. That's just fine by me as I have no place I want to go anyway. It's too cold to be outside for no good reason. Even the walk to Applebee's and back was like trudging across the arctic tundra and I won't be repeating that as it left my chest tighter than a drum skin.

I'll remain here in my nice warm room, sipping hot tea and resting. As much as my wallet needs me to get back to work my health needs me to stay put at least one more day. No point in rushing things and winding up right back where I started with a big relapse or something. Besides, trying to work sick is a good way to get hurt and I really can't afford that.

It's nice to have a good boss who actually gives a damn.

Sounds like you got a good thing going all the way around.

 

I've noticed something about "good bosses" though.  They are usually a result of being a "good employee".  Not always... but usually.

Yes, he appreciates you-good feeling.

A lot of bosses out there are not fit to be bosses simply because they lack People skills.

I may have been lucky, but I have had many good bosses, and only a couple of turds.

But you have found a good one, and to me, that is worth more than money.  A good boss will always make up for not getting the highest salary.
