Running out of money! The treasury is always loosing cash. Please Help

I keep running out of funds. Even upping the tax rates or stopping all production gets me into the red fast. Do you have to play lots of turns doing nothing but exploring to keep cash. I build two colony ships in the beginning and I am broke?

What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like you arent setting your governmental spending properly. Go into your Domestic Policy screen and lower your spending until it is less than your taxes. You should see the Net Income indicator on the right side switch to a positive number.

One thing to note about galciv economics tho: money which is allocated to a planet is spent *whether or not* you have a project assigned. So if you spending settings allow you to produce 5 shields on a given planet, you are paying for $5 for that production even if you have no ship in the queue.

Hopefully this economic model will change in the future. Theres in fact an entire thread on suggestions for a fix to this problem.

"What am I doing wrong?"

You're putting too many "o"s in "losing".

Also note that 100% tax is not the setting which creates the most income for you. Pay attention to your income as you adjust that slider and you'll notice there's an optimal level, above which your tax income actually decreases (it has to do with citizens being unable/unwilling to pay such high taxes -- so they don't).

Other ways to improve finances:

1)Sell tech/ships/etc. to the AI for lump sums or long-term payments, as the situation requires.
2)Trade. Every trade route generates per turn income.
3)Build economic improvements on your planets to increase income.
4)Increase your population. Keep your morale high and your people will breed, resulting in more people paying taxes.
5)Spend ability points during game setup on Economy, and/or use the Federalist party.

There are more ways to make money, but there are some that might help. In the early game I find selling tech to be especially useful... that's typically how I make back the money I'm losing in lease fees for my first couple colony ships.

Did you perhaps purchase those colony ships from a company other than Mitrosoft? If so, then you might be paying 10+ credits per turn per ship, which is what's sending you into the red.

Also a lot of the improvements have a maintenance cost.
You can get into a situation that you cannot raise enough taxes to pay for mainteance.

The only way out is to find someone that will buy tech or ships or a planet.

If to get to -500 all production stops ( you still have maintenance to pay)
Also once you get to -500 morale will start to drop as well.
After a few turns you will start to see defections and unless you can raise cash its pretty much game over.
