Sick

I finally made it back to the yard today after spending all of yesterday in fog so thick that I couldn't see 50 feet in front of me. I was very happy to finally be back at the yard as I am feeling like shit.

Last Monday when I unloaded in OKC one of my fellow drivers also delivered to the same airport. One look told me she was very, very sick. After we got unloaded we both went to the closest truckstop for some breakfast. She sat across the table from me. I made a point of not touching anything she touched as I didn't want to catch the same illness but I guess it's airborne because exactly one week later, yesterday, I started feeling really bad.

A bad cough, feverish, aching muscles, headache, the whole nine yards. When I woke this morning it had taken hold of me bad and I spent the first 10 minutes sitting up in bed and coughing up a lung. Lovely.

I called dispatch and told them that once I reached the yard I wasn't going anywhere but the hotel to rest. There's a snowstorm moving in tonight and they were busting ass to get everyone out tonight before it hit but I said I didn't care. I am too sick to drive safely and don't feel like doing so anyway. Snowstorm be damned, I'm not going anywhere.

I went over to Applebee's long enough to deliver the turquoise hat I had made for one of the servers and then returned to my room to rest and continue trying to cough up the other lung. If I didn't know better I would swear I have pneumonia.

Ah well, it is what it is. I'll probably live. Damn germs.

If you can get to a Dr. you don't want it getting worse than it already is. You know the drill.. Take care of yourself.

Blech. I've been avoiding sickness successfully so far this season, luckily.

Well, take it easy Mason...hope that clears up quick, at least the coughing stuff...that's a pain in the ass.

I hope you feel better soon. And if it gets any worse, try to see a doc out there M, there's a bad virus going around - once again! Lots of chicken soup and bed rest!

There is a new strain of flu going around, and yea, you probably got it.  Good luck sweating it out.  Hope it passes quickly.

There really isn't a lot a doc can do for the flu. Thanks.

You've been lucky. Yeah the coughing is the worst. I was up coughing every hour on the hour all night long.

Latest report is flu outbreak in 11 states...of course a strain not covered by this year's vaccine. If your symptons have been for less than 72 hours you can see if the doctor will give you a script for Tamiflu or other antiviral. If more than 72 hours have passed then all you can do is ride it out.

You know the routine...fluids, fluids, fluids, rest. Robitussin DM is great for easing the cough. Gets the gunk out. Tastes like ick but it does the job. Take tylenol, aspirin, or motrin for the fever and body aches...whichever your body will tolerate best. In the past my doc had me alternate motrin and tylenol to get the fever to break faster. Not sure of the rationale behind that but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Chicken soup. May be a folk remedy but it is one that has been shown to help with easing cold/flu symptoms. Get that nice server at Applebees to sweet talk the kitchen into making you a pot. Take care and don't let this thing progress. You don't want it to progress to bronchitis or pneumonia and be laid out even longer.

Thanks. Too late for the script. I'll just have to tough it out.

Thanks. It's a rough one for sure. My chest feels like it was run over by a bus.

Yep, that was what I was thinking, too.  The Flu has been really bad this year.  We have had several employees be out for quite some time with it.

Hope you start feeling better soon!

Christ-on-a-fuck-stick. I thought I was in good shape cus I got my flu shot and now I'm hearing that's not going to be much help. What states are affected, anyone have a link? It's important that I avoid this bug because of the chemo I'm on, its an immunosuppresive and a case of flu (or any type of infectuous disease) could literally kill me.

Yikes.

Seems it's an Australian strain. Thanks Oz.

Yeah several of our people have also caught it this year. I guess I couldn't dodge the bullet forever.

Thanks

Oh, LW, I won't mail or even touch your scarf until I am sure that I am over this. Wouldn't want to mail you the flu.

Thanks. I would feel terrible if I passed this bug on to you. It really is a nasty one.

I just trudged through this snowstorm we're having here in WI so I could pick up several bottles of Gatorade, some Nyquil, and some orange juice. It's snowing like mad, the wind is colder than hell, and yet by the time I made it back here I was completely drenched in sweat. Unreal.
