Some icons on Vista stop changing after a while

mostly, the new folders under your user account folder. like, downloads, contacts, links and so forth. this always happens eventually. after a clean format, they work all the time. then at some point, this time after i applied the pirate set that i bought, some of the icons wouldn't change when i updated to any other theme. then i change the icon back to the default windows icons manually, since IP couldn't do it, not by rebuilding or repair, even setting to windows default kept it as pirate.

now, they just stay as default, and won't change unless i do it manually per icon. any thoughts? i searched the forum as i thought this would be more common, since i've been running into this issue since vista came out

ok, i've done that. but anyone have any ideas on a workaround or fix when this happens?

Well it might be a straight fix. We will need to know version type, hardware... all that sort of stuff. Support is on the forums of course but we have more access and faster responce time in support tickets. I just wish to get this cleared for you quickly if possible.

You will often hear me say that in here since I am very proud of our turn over time.

honestly, it's happened on various hardware, and i just setup a new desktop pc to replace my old 1 this week, so far it's not happening. u can force it though, lets say u go into the user\downloads folder, and delete the hidden desktop.ini file, then that folder will no longer work, it will only change to the standard folder. sometimes u can fix it by getting a good desktop.ini file, but it always just seems to eventually stop working, regardless if the ini is there or not. so hit me up in the support ticket and i will help as much as i can

i'm still having this issue, and support through the helpserv system has seemed to stopped communicating with me on this issue. i don't know what to do about it now. i wish someone would offer some advice on some things i could try, the last thing i got from helpserv over [email protected] was we will forward your issue onto the developers, that was months ago.

anyone have any updates on this?  it only seems to be a problem on the domain at work, this is where it starts originally.  i can then sometimes get it to apply to the downloads live folder if i disconnect from the domain, but not always.  reconnect, doesn't work.  weird thing, on a fresh install of windows, it will work, for a while, then stop for no apparant reason.

i had a ticket with support open, in january 08 i think, and then somehow my ticket got lost and nobody knows where we left off on all the things we tried.  i'm at a loss here, dunno what to do now, between this and the uninstall bug.

so, what should i do next?

anyone?

Having the same problems.  I can't even get the default windows icon set to display.  If there is already a ticket I won't add another unless needed.

IP version 4.20.178

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 (just installed the IE V.8 update (probably a really big mistake))

3GB Ram

hmm, not sure what hardware you need to know about.  Here's the vid info:

werewolf, try launching Impulse and going to the My Software tab and right-clicking on Icon Packager then selecting "Verify Installation" If it tells you it is installed incorrectly and an update is available, select another app,(Impulse bug)then return to IP and run the update. Reboot and see if it helped.

It did say was not installed correctly, offered an update, but to a previous version (4.1)  Ran update, rebooting....(brb) Version 4.1, rebooted. Tried all options, no change.  'repair icon images' and 'repair shell icons' don't really seem to be doing anything.  Looks like no activity when selected.

Right now, I'm just trying to get the Windows default icons all correct.

If the folder is empty, the correct icon is displayed.  If the folder has contents, the wrong icon is displayed.  Looks like the 'folder-back' image is the Windows version.  The 'folder-front' is from Wraith-IP.

FIXED (not solved) Okay...so I figured the computer wanted Wraith so much I re-applied that package and all icons changed correctly.  I then applied the Windows default icons and all were changed correctly.  Have no idea what started the problem, but there 'ya go.

Thanks Wiz for the help

I wonder if the fix for blank icons from the esupport page will help restore the defaults.Note there is one fix for 32 bit and one for 64 bit. It may be worth looking into.   LINK

So, should I update to the 4.2 version and then apply this patch?  It just seems to unregister shellext.dll

If as in your post above, things are working now,I would just update to v4.20 and try it for awhile and see if it's fixed, without making any other changes. Good luck.

Yeah, think I'll try that.  Thanks again for your help.

Hmmm 4.2 doesn't seem to be available anymore.  Stardock must have pulled it.

yep, they wanted me to update to it for the right click contect menu, but it seems gone now.  lol

Hope someone is still reading this :)

I've been having problems with Windows Explorer taking a really long time to load up.  In order to troubleshoot, I wanted to change EVERYTHING back to default MS.

I still am using IP 4.1 and tried to apply Windows default icons. After much mucking about with rebooting/"repair icons", "rebuilding icon cache", etc, I have managed to get all icons changed correctly, EXCEPT for the contents of the folder "C:\"  All sub-folders are correct and all folders/sub-folders everywhere on all disk drives are correct, just the icons for "C:\" are not.  I have repeated 3 times, all the mucking about stuff to no avail.

Turns out I can fix them by clearing their 'read only' attribute, going to 'change icon>restore defaults>apply' using the context menu for each folder.  GRRR...Ok, apparently that only works on a couple of the folders. :(

Not sure how, because the last thing I did prior to this post update was reboot, but... uninstalled WB and rebooted.  All icons are displaying correctly.

I really shouldn't have to do that.

Thought I'd pass this along.

As part of the troubleshooting, after I got all the icons to display as the windows default, I uninstalled IP using Impulse.

There are now NO .exe files displaying their native icons anywhere.  This isn't good.  How do I fix that?

I had to re-install IP and then apply an icon package.  Only AFTER the application of the package did the files display their correct native icon image.

Am I the only person to experience this?

No, you're not alone. There have been a lot of "blank icons  after uninstalling IP" posts. You may want to try the fix for blank icons on the esupport page, note there is a 32 bit and 64bit version.LINK

This is a dumb question, I'm sure, but if applying a theme corrected the problem, what will happen when I use that .bat file (just unregisters shellext.dll)

Not near as dumb as me giving the same advice twice.;P Mabe someone from support will see this thread and can advise,I have never had to use it myself.

I actually took your advice the first time, but in that situation it didn't help...this time it worked.  Thanks for the repeated advice and your patience.

so support has stopped responding, anyone know why this happens?  also happens on windows 7, it's quite annoying that i have to disable network connection, reboot, apply theme, reboot
