Unable to Host a Game Troubleshooting Checklist

How to configure your computer and network gear to host games online

If you are having problems hosting a game here are a couple things you want to verify your networking and Windows configuration.

If your network has a router that connects to you to your ISP equipment verify these 2 things.

1. UPnP has to be enabled on your router.
2. Port 6112 has been redirected to your IP address for TCP/UDP traffic.

Windows XP has 2 services that are required for UPnP that are set to manual by default.
1. Verify that the service "SSDP Discovery Service" is started and set to automatic.
2. Verify that the service "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" is started and set to automatic.

1. UPnP has to be enabled on your router.

I am in a peculiar situation where I am behind a double NAT.

The reason for that is because my modem (Gigaset 201A) is running on an older firmware. There is a newer version, but there are reports that it locks up on heavy loads such as bittorrent. And the older version has a problem with bridge mode, it doesn't work.

So, I am stuck with a NAT on the modem, which supports UPnP, and another NAT on the router, which also supports UPnP. I believe the UPnP requests stop at the router and IP visibility is not possible because of that.

The host test tells me my IP is not visible, and recommends me to use Alloy. I have hosted 2 games succesfully, but in one of them I was disconnected from the server.

Is there anything I can do to improve this situation?
