Ship battles really slow

I don't think it's a computer problem, but whenever I load up GalCivI the space battles always take 1-2 minutes. Always. Even someone blowing up a sensor probe takes forever. It's like the game stutters or something.

Is this a software glitch? Is there a patch? Has anyone else had this problem?

I've also encountered this issue, though for me it's not every battle, only a select few. I discovered by pressing the Windows button, and then clicking on an application, then switching back, it speeds up. :/ (I'm running an ATI Radeon 4850)

I have the same problem as the original poster, and the workaround provided by silkweaver indeed works, but it is not very satisfying when there are many battles in a given turn. Are there any other things that can be done to solve this problem? Is it a video driver related problem?
