Help me out here please! Songs I shouldn't be living without

I need your help folks.  I have a couple of free songs available to me via iTunes (sorry, don't have extras available, only redeemable to me, compliments of having bought some Starbucks gift cards).  I've not used these free song downloads yet because I'm having a devil of a time thinking of what songs I should be getting here.

Don't mistake me for saying that I don't have some favorite artists and songs.  I have plenty of options there, but narrowing down my choices is just not easy.  Most of my favorites are already in my much larger MP3 and WMA library.  I'd list them, but there are so many that it would take far too long.

What I'm looking for here is suggestions of songs that absolutely, positively, should be in my collection or in anybody's music collection.  Classic tunes.  Greatest hits type tunes.  Not necessarily from well known artists, or even major commercial hits, but just great songs.

Please give me some choices to consider.  I can sample 30 seconds for free, get a feel for the tune and see if it's one that I'd want to use one of my freebies on.  I'm hopeful that someone has a few total gems to consider.

songs that no self respecting MP3 player should be without...

Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson

Kryptonite or Love Me When I'm Gone by 3 Doors Down

Bohemian Rhapsody or Love of My Life by Queen

Empire or Silent Lucidity by Queensrhyche

Wizards in Winter by Trans Siberian Orchestra

Ok, there are a million more, but there's a decent start. ;~D

I'll try to run through the suggestions a few at a time and see how I go....

SanChonino suggested:

Either Rush's newest offering, Snakes and Arrows, or Neurosis' latest disc, Given to the Rising.

I like a lot of Rush tunes and have a fair amount of my favorites of same in MP3 format.  A friend that I've sort of lost touch with was a huge Rush fan.  Picking any one Rush tune is difficult at best since they have so many good ones.

Neurosis is something I could check out, thanks for that suggestion.

Locamama suggested:

1.  Flathead - the Fratellis, 2.  Always Love - Nada Surf, 3.  Phantom Limb - The Shins, 4.  Wedding Day - Rosie Thomas, 5.  Timebomb - Beck

Ah, stuff I'm not that familar with (I've heard plenty of Beck stuff in the past, not so much of the other suggestions...)  Gives me some things to check out and sample.

ParaTed2k suggested:

Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson

Got that one.  Excellent tune.

continued:

... 3 Doors Down

More great stuff (again, in the collection already)

... Queen

Ah, nice suggestions.  Not sure how much Queen stuff I have in the library, but great suggestions.  I need to revisit Love of My Life and check that out more.

... Queensrhyche

Another great suggestion, have those already and enjoy them a lot.

... Trans Siberian Orchestra

Enjoy the stuff I've heard from same, though I get bored with it too quickly I think.

Keep coming with suggestions though (please), you all will start figuring out the tastes I have as we go for sure.

Some suggestions by Dr Guy:

Paint it black - Stones

Great tune.  I think I have that one in the collection already (I have a fair amount of Stones tunes in my collection already...)

Knights in White Satin - Moody Blues

Another good choice.  Not sure I have that tune, but I do have some Moody Blues stuff already.  I like that song, but not sure I'd use a pick on it currently.

Evermore - Led Zep

Not a song that I remember, so worth checking out as a possibility.

Unchained Melody

Great tune, but a bit old for my tastes and not one I'd pick up currently...

99 Miles from LA - Johnny Mathis

Mathis is a classic, but not sure I'd go that direction.  I might be more tempted by a different Johnny, like say Cash and a Walk the Line choice

Riders on the Storm - Doors

Great tune.  I'm definitely light on Doors tunes as I like some of their stuff, but am not so thrilled with others.

A day in the Life - Beatles

Great song.  The Let It Be album by the Beatles is one of my all time favorites, with similar sounding tunes being right up there.

I Like You - Donovan

Have to sample that one more.

Edge of 17 - Stevie Nicks

Great tune.  Amazing that Stevie Nicks ever got it recorded considering the state of most of the Fleetwood Mac band members when that tune and the Rumors album were being made.

Tusk - Fleetwood Mac

Interesting tune, but not necessarily a favorite for me.

As you can tell - my tastes are not locked into one genre - unless you think all of them as classic (I do like some of the new stuff).  The best of it is, my youngest son is really into that era of music, so we discuss it often.

I'm much the same.  I like some Country, some Rock, some Pop, some Jazz, some 'standards' and classic tunes, etc.  About the only thing I really don't like is Opera.

I did burn one of the freebies that I had available last nite, but still have a few more.  The one that I used last night was on a Randy Newman tune: Baltimore.

I have designs (my eyes) on another artist, Sarah Buxton, but she has the equivalent of an EP at present and I'll just wind up buying the entire thing for the $4.99 price tag that iTunes offers it at, but before then I'm still looking for more choices for the freebies that I have que'd up.

I was checking back through some Delbert McClinton tunes, along with Van Morrison too.  Several intriquing possibilities, but none that were screaming 'must have' to me at the time.
