There is a problem with your sunage install:
You fail to create the 'UserData' subdirectory when installing.
This means the creation of profiles in SunAge will fail. (Which means you cannot start the campaign.)
Of course, you can easily create the directory manually, but you will have to know that is the problem...
I had to use filemon to see where the profile creation went wrong.

Mind fixing that?

I am somewhat tempted, but don't want to be burned on this one... Any of the people who've played it want to truthfully recommend it?

It is a fun game. But unfortunately, there are quite a few annoying bugs at the moment. The developers are hard at work fixing them however.
Also, the control scheme is rather peculiar; Not bad, but quite unusual.

I'd recommend you get the game when the major bugs are fixed.

Those 3 in-game videos are made by Bedlam Emblem from Vertex4 forums, should give you a good idea about the game.
