Sound Editing

Is it possible to change certain sounds in game without causing synch problems? For example, giving the Vasari a thrice-be-damned pirate warning thats distinct from an enemy scout?!

I believe so, as long as you keep the same filename + filetype you should be safe. Is it fair compared to other players? No, it's cheating and exploiting.

I don't believe so, I never checked it out of course but they must be doing a crc check on the files or else it would be way too easy to fool the system.

I would assume it is just a naming system that determines which sound is played at a given time. The engine shouldn't care what sound it is as long as it matches the triggers name.

Hey, TEC players have somethings thats (reasonably) distinct from regular incoming enemy warnings. Its hardly cheating to do the same thing for Vasari, especially if I make the change available to others!

Cheating by giving yourself an advantage to other players.
Exploiting how the engine check sound files.

No, I'm giving myself an advantage that TEC players already have!

The only directories checked that get CRC checked are GameInfo and Mesh. I don't see an issue with making the sound banks more varied; the engine already differentiates between the different events when selecting sounds.
