Do you still play Civilization IV?

I'm wondering if it's still worth buying...

Hi, everyone.

I remember when Civilization IV came out in 2005, it was hailed as one of the best strategy games of all times.

I didn't buy it, or even play it, back then. But recently, I saw the release of an expansion pack called "Beyond the Sword," which got great reviews and looks very cool.

So, I was wondering what you guys think of Civilization IV now, a little over 2 years after its release. Is it still worth getting? Specifically,

* Do you still play Civilization IV?
* What did you think of the "Warlords" expansion pack?
* What do you think of the "Beyond the Sword" expansion pack?
* Is a new version of Civilization about to be released that I should just wait for?
* What other strategy games do you think are better than Civilization?

Please keep in mind that I'm a novice at these computer strategy games. I do like board games like Stratego and Risk, and in the (way distant) past, I enjoyed games like Caesar II and SimCity.

Thanks a bunch.

Yes, I always play it.

It's THE TBS. Why? Because aside from being solid as standard, it's the most moddable game out there, which lets the community create nearly every possible feature ever wanted in a TBS game.

I won't be surprised if it pops up a mod which replaces my sci-fi fix that GC provides.

And yes, Fall From Heaven is a brilliant example of how much more you can get from a TBS game.

MoO2 > Civ.

That said, MoO2 > Anything, really.

But yes, I occasionally play Civ4 with its two expansions. The AI is sadly nothing compared to GC2, but like MoO2, it's just a blast to play with a friend, cooperative against a bunch of hostile AIs.

I still remember whole weekends, spend playing MoO2 without a break, trying for a faster win, one of us with a race dedicated to research, the other one dedicated to warfare. It was mostly a matter of how fast we could establish communication, but still... those were the times.

I still play Civ 3. But yes, I do.

Warlords- if you like scenarios, get it. A lot of people say a lot of people don't, but personally, I enjoy scenarios better.

Beyond the Sword- GET. IT. It's really really good and I don't think I'd ever play a game of Civ4 without it.

* Do you still play Civilization IV?

Yes, absolutely. I'll probably still be playing it until they come out with Civ V.

* What did you think of the "Warlords" expansion pack?

Loved it. An absolute must-have if you're to buy this series.

* What do you think of the "Beyond the Sword" expansion pack?

Still getting used to it, but the extra civs it offers are what really make the expansion. Darius and Pericles are totally uber. The whole spy and corporation things seem a tad under-utilized, but they're still making improvements via patches and what not. Overall though, I'm very happy with BtS.

* Is a new version of Civilization about to be released that I should just wait for?

Not to anyone's knowledge. They're probably working on another expansion pack for Civ IV, but if so, it hasn't been announced yet. The only "new version of Civ" about to come out is the console version, which I have no intention of buying. I didn't get a 360 to play Civ, I got it to play games like BioShock. I save Civ for the PC.

* What other strategy games do you think are better than Civilization?

None. Absolutely none. Civ IV is, bar none, the single best 4X game I have ever played in my entire life, and I've been playing them since "Empire" back in the old BBS days. They're my specialty game genre, and Civ IV is more than I ever dreamt of.

As far as space 4X games go, Master of Orion II has so far been the best, but that takes into account the fact that I only just now got my ser# for GalCiv2, and now that I've got the updates, I'm sure GalCiv2 is going to give MoO2 a serious run for its money. If you get a chance to check out MoO2 though, it's totally worth it, and you can probably get it very cheap these days. Do NOT get MoO3. It sucks. It's like they took all the work of a 4X, multiplied it by 1000, and sucked out all the fun, color, and flavor of the game, but MoO2 was awesome and remains the benchmark against which all 4X space games are held to.

Beyond the sword is a much more important exp pack than warlords.

BtS includes all of the Warlords stuff except the scenarios, so...

I played one game of Civ IV and I was done. It simply moves TOO SLOWLY. Galciv2 is not as bad in that way.

I have to question this MoO 2 thing. Does it still compare to today's market? And it the only reason MoO 3 isn't good because it is too realistic and deep? I mean, I'll never regret my decision to buy the first Gal Civ over MoO 3 and its funny I made the decision because i went against my terms about graphics and i still don't remember why. I had never heard anything about either of them, so it was just an impulse. I just want to know the reasons as to why 2 and 3 are hailed so differently.

Im my opinion MOO 3 was a good game. Yea it had a lot of issues, and moved sooooo slowly, but it really did give the feeling of an active living galaxy.

Civ4 beyond the sword is fantastic. It is just so full of so much cool stuff. I actually dont think I have played just a normal random game of it. Im always playing the various scenarios/mods that were released with the game. It has this awesome mod that is essentially a world map with all the civs on it, but they appear at thier respective period. For example, America does not become playable until 1776. When that happens you have the choice to switch your civ and start playing as the Americans. It is like that for all the civs though. I remeber playing one game as the Romans and struglleing to hold the empire together as France and Spain and Germany burst onto the scene, not to mention the historical barbarian invasions.

Sorry but, Alpha Centauri >> MoO 2 and Civ combined

Anyways, the only real thing Civ 4 has going for is its modability. Fall for Heaven is absolutely fantastic. 'Shadow' (the next phase, HUGE release) is due out December 18th I think.

By the way, don't waste your money on Warlords; more like a glorified patch than an actual expansion. BTS was pretty decent though.

Master of Orion 2 is by far the best space TBS game made to date. I have not played GC2 yet. I"m downloading it right now. MoO2 if you never played it you are missing out on a great game. Not sure where you could come by a copy these days though... bet it would run like $5-$10. This game does not have the graphics of the games today, but the gameplay is second to none.

Hellz no, the AI just annoys the heck out of me.

1 - Occasionally, but not as often as GalCiv2 these days (in the past that was different).
2 - Good, but buy Beyond the Sword instead as it has nearly everything from Warlords
3 - Very Good, it has a few bugs that Firaxis is working on, but a definite buy
4 - No. There is a console-based version coming out, but I don't think that is what you're asking for.
5 - Civilization is the king of the Genre. GalCiv2, Age of Wonders series, the Warlords series, the early Master of Orion Series, Master of Magic were all good in their time.

Civilisation is a good game. But it has a CD copy protection and so I cannot play it, when I travel. That is whay I don't play it, but I will gladly return to it, if I have time.

Civilization is the best TBS i have ever played. The last expansion pack adds lot of new features and IMO is a must buy if you like civilization4.

If CIV4 after 2 years remains a good game? There are no others TBS games released(not considering wargames)that are remotely as good as GC2 and CIV4, I wouldn't certainly miss this game considering you can find it also at a cheap cost.

For what i've read and heard it excellent. I remember Civ2 which was one of the best games ever, SMAC even better. Civ3 did not feel good for some reason.
I'd play it if i had it, i'd buy it right away if i knew wether it works with Radeon9200 (old, yes, gotta buy new comp anyway so i'm not upgrading).
I have games that don't support 9200 but work anyway. Usually older ones.

I suggest you to download a demoversion. If it works - fine. Buy it. If not, save your money.

best strategy games ever:

1) Master of Orion 2

2) Civilization Call to Power 2

still all way best compared to civ4 + both expansion and galciv2 + exp.
i would like to see a civ ctp3.

in galciv2, i hate not to have borders and not to be able to control my own space...

I don't play Civ IV anymore. It was fun while it lasted and I played it against a friend. But we gave up because it took too much time. I also figured out how to get Caesar ranking so after that not much left to play. In general Civ IV is fun, but the end game is too much micromanaging, although other games have this problem toward the end as well.

I have a personal affinity for Master of Magic, but MOO2 is the most addictive game I've played. I actually had to sell it to stop myself from playing it. ;p
