Among The Clouds

I'm stuck for the weekend. I'm sitting in a truckstop east of Seattle with a view of the cloud wrapped mountains and tall pines outside my windshield. Here the clouds are not something way up in the sky, but are instead something that drifts around you. It's quite a sight.

Coming in here I had to come through Snoqualmie Pass. As I climbed the mountain the rain started becoming more solid as it hit the windshield, that squishy sort of sleet that isn't quite liquid but not quite solid either. As I climbed higher it changed over to very large snowflakes. A lot of them. By the time I reached the top of the pass it was snowing like hell. It's too early in the year for that crap.

Of course as I dropped back off the pass it gradually changed back over to rain again. Here it's cold and rainy. The temps are actually in the high 40s/low 50s but the dampness makes it feel much colder and the coldness just sort of soaks into you. Yuck. The locals here are talking about being able to ski soon. They can have it, I prefer to stay nice and warm. I'm not a fan of Winter sports and much prefer bicycling weather to sledding weather.

Old Man Winter is coming whether I like it or not so I guess I'll just have to stay bundled up and live with it for the next few months. Where the hell is global warming when you need it?

It might not be but your description makes it sounds really beautiful!

You know, if I could I would love to be the fly (or gnat) in your truck going along for the ride! Just to see and experience some of the things you do! I was going to say hornet but you might squash me!!

You have your nice warm scarf and socks, so you're prepared for Old Man Winter by now!

The scenery is quite nice, but the weather could be better.

I've been wearing my newly made hat and today am wearing one of the pairs of socks I made, but haven't worn the scarf yet. It just doesn't seem cold enough to warrant a scarf yet. I'm currently working on a black one and will do a matching hat for it as well. I need to get busy on some heavy wool socks, I think I'll be needing them soon.

Where the hell is global warming when you need it?

Only where it causes trouble and where no one can enjoy it.

It's still been pretty nice here in the ol' Miami Valley...but I reckon it'll take a turn for the worse before very long...November or so, most likely.

Hey Mason,

For the first time in 10 years of coaching I had a boy on my team knitting on the bus today. I've never seen one kid in all this time do this...boy or girl.

It kind of shocked me to see Scott do this. He's very introverted, a loner who doesn't have alot to do with the team other than run with them. He's always off by himself listening to his IPOD with a stoic look on his face. So when he pulled out the skein of red yarn and stared knitting away I think he blew us all away. I was surprised the other boys didn't laugh or say anything. They all were watching him tho.

I actually told him about you and your knitting. Scott was making a hat he said. It was funny but as he was knitting he was more conversive and friendlier to his teammates as they watched him asking him questions in the process.

BTW I agree with you on the weather. It looks like we're getting out of here in the nick of time.......just before the snow hits. We'll be in sunny FL before too long and not missing the snow one bit!

Although, I'm on the east side of the state Mt. Spokane got a couple of inches the other day. I love it! This transplanted Floridian, LOVES IT!

I hate driving in it, but I don't like driving anyway. I hope you have clear roads for your trip back. but you do get to drive through some beautiful country.

It's probably because it's something he knows he is good at doing and the others guys don't know how. It's good he's keeping the manly art of knitting alive for another generation.

That twixt state of the rain you speak of always fascinates me, more so than snow, sleet or rain.  It is rain, but rain that is almost like molasses.

Hope the wait is not too bad.  And yuo get your travel papers early this morning.

Thanks. They faxed the new permit over to me on Saturday. Now I am just waiting for the Seattle rush hour curfew to pass so I can get moving. No oversized loads can move through there until after 9:00 am local time.
