HELP virtual pc noob

Hi all.
Just stuck with some very simple stuff. I have to enable the two more virtual disks for my virtual machine. I am just lost as how to do this. Once this is done I have to create different volumes which I can do. I dont understand how to get the two drives enabled for me to start creating volumes on them.
Its an exercise but I cant get them enabled for my vpc already.

Hi bdafox,

Edit: I realised after typing this you were referring to the branded Microsoft Virtual PC and not a generic heading. Still I think the basics of creating the virtual disc are similar in many machines so I'll edit and then let this stand. I've changed the links at the bottom to ones targeted at Microsoft VirtualPC 2007

You are generally required with VM's to use a wizard which amongst other things will ask you to identify the sort of OS you wish to install. You will need to set the maximum desired size of the disc and whether it's fixed or dynamically expanding (changing to accommodate the size of data. VirtualPC appears to use dynamically expanding without being asked). The amount of RAM you wish to make available, the sort of network you want to set up eg. Bridged, Host-only or NAT etc.. depending on the machine.

You will of course need to identify the source of the .iso. that you are using to install the virtual machine. This is normally done in settings along with the options for mounting optical drives, accessing sound etc.

So the key points are checking the integrity of your source image(.iso), going through the disc wizard to set parameters, ensuring the source image is pointed to properly in the appropriate menu. Most of the other stuff is fine tuning and can be changed at a later point.

I recommend understanding the basics of the networking choices.

Re-edited above - I've done it on the fly, so please if anyone spots something that needs correcting - just add a post.

It is safest to do this with the virtual machine turned off, although it can be done on the fly.

1. Select your VM and hit the settings button
2. Choose Hard Disk 2 or Hard Disk 3
3. Click the Virtual Hard Disk Wizard button
4. Next
5. Select Create a new virtual disk and click Next
6. Select A Virtual Hard Disk and click Next
7. Type the path or use the Browse button to select where you want the new .VHD file to be stored. Click Next
8. Choose the option you want for the size (Dynamically expanding is recommended, and the file representing the disk will initially take up less space). Click Next
9. Set the size and click Next
10. Click Finish

Repeat the above to create another disk for your VM. Start your VM - if it is a Windows VM, use the Disk Management Tool to partition and format the drives for use after you log on.
