About Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Soulstorm

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is set in Games Workshop's (LSE: GAW) Warhammer 40,000 universe - a dark, futuristic, fantasy setting where armies of technologically advanced warriors, fighting machines and hordes of implacable aliens wage constant war - and is played by millions worldwide. Executive produced and co-developed by Relic Entertainment in association with Iron Lore Entertainment, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is a complete standalone title and will feature two all-new armies, including the malicious Dark Eldar, for an unprecedented total of nine playable races. In addition to new units across each of the seven existing races, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm will incorporate air units for the first time and introduce multiplayer medals, adding a whole new level of depth to online battles. The revolutionary meta-game introduced in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade is further expanded to an interplanetary scale in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, allowing players to battle across an entire star system.

I wonder if the new race will make the others look outdated...

I think they are limited in what they can do with the engine that's probably at least 4 years old or more.

Rumor mill suggests it's a 3rd party developer too, as opposed to an in house studio of THQ.

There should be a preview in the Games for Windows mag coming out this week.

Looks like 1 new race is dark eldar. I hope the other race is tyranids. Sadly enough, expansion = no expanded scale I think some of the maps are too small and same with the armys (especially with apocalypse coming out!)

Me too.

However the races isnt what really matters, interplanitary game play!!!

I think there is expanded scale... they have multiple worlds...

The big draw back of traditional RTS games when you expand scale of course is that the whole economic and production systems stops making sense. I mean, why am I training people 1 miles from the front line and immediately before a battle?

Some sort of requisition system makes more sense with production and economic facilities at a persistent base deep in your own territory.

We'll see what happens, but it should be fun regardless.

Karma, just enjoy it, please don't make it difficult.

And by the way, you dont ever 'train' anything(except for maybe the orks). Everything just falls from space in large quantities.

I mean the maps, not the campaign (campaign = lots of maps )

Well the last game kind of did that... taking given maps gave you access to special starting units or buildings... or the ability to move around the map easier.

But my favorite thing was that if you built a base on one map, you wouldn't have to rebuilt it unless it was destroyed.

They're adding air units to this game, so they might have a larger scale. Air units giving you the ability to move around the map "faster"...

Relic Entertainment and Iron Lore Entertainment are working in-tandem, and it seems Relic Entertainment cannot handle the full-load of the number of projects in-development. I'm guessing a good portion of the Dawn of War team are working on a new engine for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2.

The engine currently in-use is roughly six years old, based on a modified version of the Impossible Creatures engine. I didn't even think they would make this upcoming expansion, as it was really time to make an engine that better suits the game.

I doubt that. They already said the Tyranids wont be released in any expansion for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, as the engine wouldn't do them justice.

In any case, looking forward to conquering some planets.

The other new race is the Sisters of Battle. Thats what I read on Gamespot.

Cool i like Sisters of Battle....but i would really rather it be tyranids! (i feel so bad for them )

Apparently they can't do Tyranids with the current engine. I've heard that they'll be in DoW 2, though.

'Nids could be doable in the DOW/Impossible creatures engine. However Relic stated many MANY times that it wouldn't do the 'nids any justice. The engine is dated, and a new one is in development for DoW2. Which no doubt we will see 'nids then. I think the main problem with 'nids and DoW1 (other than the'll look like crap) is the resourcing system. Tyranids need biomass to build, and reproduce IIRC. The current requisition/power system wouldnt make any sense for a 'nid. They need to mass harvest dead (or living) life forms.

So now there are 3 Imp factions. Only cool part i see of the Sisters of Battle from the videos is they use of lots of ranged melta/flame thrower weapons (They also look strikingly similar to the models of the SoB mod).

Dark Eldar seem to fit in quite nicely with the old engine. The videos didn't show much of them, but they seem to use the same tech as the regular Eldar (duh, same race 'cept they turned to evil). Im not up to speed on my DE fluff. I am assuming they use speed, hit, and run tactics, and stealth IIRC.

For those that want to play 'nids now, i may suggest the Tyranid mod for DoW.

This should be an interesting expansion.
