The Loss of Civility

Perhaps that is misleading.  As in did we ever have it?  I know at times we all get "het up" about posts and blogs.  But with the banishment of a couple from the left, and the absence of some of the right, for the most part, we have a very knowledgeable and opinionated group.  That can at least discuss and debate the issues of the day.  But that seems to be missing.

I once was a regular on the religion forum.  I started posting some articles on my faith.  But then I was attacked by one of the regulars, and after some heated exchanges, and some admonishment by a couple of people I do respect, I decided that they were just getting my goat.  So I rarely, if ever, go to that forum.  In fact, I make it a point to avoid them save for one poster.

We still have a couple of loons left on JU.  I can think of one on the right and one on the left off the top of my head.  But I do avoid both of their postings.  Others do not, so I guess that is why they stay around.

Several months ago, MasonM issued an apology to some bloggers for his negativism.  At that time, I congratulated him, and noted that I do avoid those who have nothing to say except to incite me (due to my beliefs).  There is a difference between inciting and instigating debate.  Most of the ones I enjoy debating are still here as they are firm in their beliefs, and willing to give as good as they get, fact wise.

And we still do have some that incite others for whatever reason.  But why cant we just ignore those who inflame us?  I know that some, in their beliefs, are inciting anger in others.  But why do we read them?  Why not just ignore them?  Quite frankly, I don't have any problems with those who do not believe as I do.  i know I am a heretic in some respects to their beliefs.  But I can accept their beliefs without being threatened by their non-approval of mine.  Seriously, if you are secure in your beliefs and the other is not using personal attacks, why worry?

I guess I do not understand those who see a person's firm belief as a threat to their own beliefs.  I know that no where in this world (other than the mind of Osama Bin Laden) are all beliefs going to always be in total agreement. But that I believe different than you, does not mean I cannot respect you or your beliefs.  Or that I do not.  Not others.  I see a couple of bloggers who are night and day in their beliefs and yet they manage a civil discussion.  Sure what they write may seem condemnatory to those who do not agree with them, but that does not bother me.  Why?  I am secure in my beliefs and neither has ever said "Doc Guy, you are damned".

Sure their words may indicate that since I don't believe as they do, I am not on the path to salvation. But condemned?  Nope, because my faith is different and it does not affect me.

I guess I am just wondering why we cannot debate issues, and agree to disagree at the end of the day.  I know the ones on the left will never be right (politically - but I do love the entendre. ;) ), and the Born Agains will not be Catholics (nor will the Jews and Muslims), but then that does not bother me.

I am not one to see that only one way is the absolute.  I see many ways, and we must each chose our best way.  Once chosen, are we so insecure as to doubt that?  If we are not, who cares?  Seriously, why worry about someone else's statements of their belief if we are secure in our own?

We run the gamut here at JU.  All Faiths and political persuasions are represented.  With few exceptions, I don't think ill of any of those.  And those exceptions are ones that all the core JU know well, and for the most part laugh at.  So why do we have to feel the need to bash the others with hateful words just because we do not agree with their writings?  As was said, if they say "john Doe, you are condemned" that is one thing.  If they say "This is the way, and others have to follow it" is another.

The former is a direct assault.  The latter is a statement of faith. Theirs not yours.

Where I live there's a group that gathers to do bible study.  I was invited,  however declined.  I know how to read the bible and choose to do so in private.

Their beliefs include not attending the bingo games here,  nor using the pool table.  Fine.  However....they made their disapproval verbal and gave me and mine dirty looks for using the pool table.. Tooo damn bad.

I think that some,  when they can't change another's mind,  resort to name calling and slurs because they are insecure and they can't stand to "not be right" on some subjects,  by gollee if their "takes" on a subject aren't agreed with,  well then "you're an idiot"  is their motto.

I didn't agree with Dharma's thoughts on my blog about the jail food,  however she was respected by me and what's so dang hard about doing that??  NOTHING!

I think the loss of civility on blogs represents how our world is becoming,  including but not limited to things like "road rage",  rudeness in stores,  students attacking other students physically ( the girl that was beaten when it was "supposed to be a sleepover type night)  and on and on....

People that "have to be right"  usually are insecure,  and are obstinate to the point of being closed to other possibilities in the world,  whether it's religion,  politics,  or thoughts in general.  Whew,  I'll get off my soapbox now

And that is the real point.  You then chose to disassociate with them.  That is good.  But some feel it is necessary to beat the dead horse and continue to argue with them.  It will change nothing, and in the final reality may deny a friendship that can transcend differences.  Probably not, but then stranger things do happen.

And thanks for the insightful.

I wouldn't have chosen to not associate with them had they not given me verbal grief and cast dirty looks in my way...I might even have gone to a bible study for the chance to learn something...actually was considering it...

A friendship with two of them has been shot down by their actions and words...time and life is too dang short to be trying to cope with the kind of grief these two women gave me,  over a sign,  a game of pool and and bingo for crying out loud...

In a nut shell!  In a nut shell.

So why do people on JU continue to go back to the meetings?  That is the question.

Yes, and on the internet they can do it with no reprecussions. Still, as I view JU as kind of a community, I lamment the fact that they behave differently here than in real life. Sure, the anonymity does abet it. But why waste the energy?

Very!

I can say that especially in lieu of my recent blog where civility has been wanting these days. It's very frustrating and tiring and once again, I keep thinking why bother?

I know you and I are not on the same page religiously Doc, but I have to say to me you are very civil and I appreciate that. I would consider you a friend even if it's only internet driven. I hope you feel the same about me.

Civility is futile, at times! Some people are just passionate about what they believe and that's how they show it! But I do get what you're saying and agree that being civil is always a good thing. I also feel that it is everyone's right (which is what you said, basically) to disagree and move on. It's always interesting to hear someone's views when it differs from yours. The problem is when that someone thinks that they are right and you're wrong and then add insults to the fray! I stay out of politics, for the most part, I think I've written maybe three articles on it...but stay interested at what is going on in my world. On JU I don't venture because I can't argue as some I see and don't take kindly to being thrown out the bar, sooo, I drink on my own sometimes!!

As for religion, it's a part of my life, warts and all. I don't always read all that I see posted. Sometimes I miss some good ones. I also try to stay away from the ones I know would be over the top, not my beliefs and I leave them to their own. I'm not a saint, as you know, but I do write about it sometimes.

I'll end here, I'm rambling!!

I usually avoid the religion thread altogether, my personal thoughts are that strong in that area.

Which is ironic, since I began blogging intending to blog on religious topics.

Politics, religion, and BBQ recipes are all hot topics best avoided.

We are not, nor do I think we will ever be.  But I do respect your faith and beliefs. As you have always mine.  It is actually a friend of yours that prompted this blog.  I miss HC and hope she pops in more.  TO friendly debates and discussions.

Said in one statement what half of my long rambling tried to!  Very good and thank you.

And I will buy the next round at the bar, and we will talk about Soccer and Baseball.

You are very opinionated in that area.  But also one of the most civil.  You state what YOU believe and not what OTHERS should.  And that is the key.  I enjoyed my blogging on parts of Catholicism, not as a way of converting others and condeming them.  But to explain my beliefs.  I think (from what I have read) that you and KFC do as well.  And Lula (sorry for not mentioning you as well) who knows more about my faith than I do!  Shame on me.

OK!  The gloves come off!  Real BBQ is NOT made in North Carolina!

When I was in Nevada, there were several BBQ places. Not ONE of them served brisket!

One thing I can tell you with authority is it is NOT an authentic BBQ restaurant if there is no brisket! Simply slapping BBQ sauce on a slab of meat doesn't make it BBQ!

I may get killed for this, but Virginia is the opposite in their BBQ. No Sauce. Just the way it is cooked. for me, give me Texas BBQ any day! (altho I do love South Carolina mustard BBQ as well).

I wanted to comment, but I have nothing to say on the topic of BBQ.

Regardless, yeah, civility is up to each individual poster. The civilness in my comment is directly proportionate to how you view it, tone it, read it. If you want to see my post as an attack against you, you will. I can't help that. All I can do is post what I think, believe, and hope that you take it the way it was meant - with the best of intentions!

Now that I know, I'm in then.   as long as I can BBQ fish on Friday!!

That aside, a thumbs up for this good and much needed article. I agree with your take re the lack of civility here on JU.

You write

It's true, there certainly are knowledgeable people whose varied opinions make for good discussion and debate, but I've noticed that while the discussion/debate starts out with a civil tone, it then all too often disintegrates into personal back-biting and pointless attack.

I wonder how many of the people who are part of the disintigration are like that in real life. Or is is just the anonymity of the keyboard that makes them become rude and condescending?
