With palms together,
Good Morning Universe,
Our home is full of heartbeats: Son Jacob, Almost Daughter-in-Law Julie, granddaughter Samie, wife Judy, pups Pepper, Tripper, and Shawn, and kitties Pete and Lost in the Bedroom Kat, and of course, myself. Lots of activity, lots of close living, lots of opportunity to learn to appreciate each other.
My son, Jacob, is an excellent chef. He recently sold his bistro in Wilmington and has moved here to Las Cruces to live. We have been searching for a restaurant location and actually found a great place. Jacob is tribal Jewish, an artist and musician, as well. Julie is a recent MFA grad and has been teaching at the University of North Carolina. She wrote her thesis on growing up in an abusive Christian school. Later she found she is part Jewish. She has an opportunity to begin teaching classes here at NMSU. And Samie is 14 and on break from her classes at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. My wife is a convert to Judaism, a member of the Temple's rabbinical search committee, and a teacher at the Temple's religious school. I am a JuBu crazy man just trying to stay alive. Interesting blend of family values. Dinner table discussions are always a treat. We haven't had the TV on for a week. Bliss.
Today Samie leaves for Florida to visit my other son, Jason, her father, then she will fly back to Cleveland and return to school. Jason and Maggie are down to earth folk who enjoy motorcycles, cars, and all things blue collar. My daughter Samantha is a brilliant research scientist doing her post doc at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. An unabashed atheist, Sam is always a spice I love to have at the table.
Soon Jacob and Julie will move into a condo here in Las Cruces and go about nesting. This will leave Judy and I to once again sort things out and put our little condo back together again.
My sense is that the diversity of ideas within our family is a real blessing. I have no doubts as to the purity of my children's hearts. They are each wonderful people with clear visions of what is right and good. Each are moral beings who come to the good from very different points of view. Its quite amazing actually.
Yet it would seem this is the very definition of family.
Be well.
