Brad's ongoing GalCiv update thread

Hi gang. I won't be around today, I'm at home -- my wife and I are moving to a new home. Even as I type this in the basement, there are boxes all around me and my wireless laptop is connected to my cellphone so I'll make this brief.

We'll hvae updates via SDCentral next week to GalCiv but those who want to try early patches here they are:

1) Some people have reported that the game crashes when they submit their score.

Try this new DLL (replace the one in your GalCiv directory):
http://www.stardock.com/temp/sdnetlib.dll

Here is an update that adds a few nice little tweaks. Just unzip with the directory structure intact into your GalCiv directory.
http://www.stardock.com/temp/gc101a.zip

Let us know how these work for you.

Holy crap, I just re-registered my player, exited the game, re-loaded my save, submitted, and it worked. Posted immediately!

Well, what does everyone here who can't upload have in common?

Retail copy
101 update installed (from SDC)
Bonus Material installed (From SDC)
New DLL and "a" updates installed from top of this thread
New multimedia installed (From SDC)
Win XP
Internet Connection: Cable through a switch (although it didn't upload when I was connected strait)
Norton Antivirus running in background
No Firewall

I can't think of anything else to add.

David, rbloom, Mark,

No I am not seeing any of your scores in the database. We are using http to send the data. We don't think its a network issue but we are not ruling anything out yet since we are not sure where the problem is occuring yet.

Anyone have a packet sniffer? If you do, turn it out before you submit your score and see if anything tries to get through.

Congrats Dave!! Did you do anything to fix it, or just try again and it worked??

Ok, now I'm seriously confused. I did exactly what Dave did and it worked. I can see my score on the Metaverse. Pretty strange. I'm going to try a "quick" game and see if it gets uploaded.

I did go up and try to register again by taking out the dashes in the serial number, and it told me it was not valid, so I put them back in and it took it. Then just started up GC, loaded the save, submitted, and instantly, it was up there. Very confusing.... :notsure:

One thing that I thought of is that I have two network cards in the machine I'm playing on. One goes to the net, and one goes to an internal network. My internal network has preference, so if the game is specifically selecting a card, it's probably getting the wrong one. I'll try swapping them when I get a chance.

Yes, it gave me credit for the 2nd game. I made sure I had a score of 0 so I could make sure it wasn't an earlier upload. I didn't do anything different than I was doing before, except I didn't have Stardock Central running at the time I uploaded. Would that make a difference?

Oh, let me know if you need any further info from me. I would really like to know why it didn't work before. I'm a curious type, and like to know why things work, and especially so when they don't!

I'm thinking that new .dll fixed the problem, but we needed to re-register the player and/or restart Galciv (twice) to get it to work. Also, maybe there is a bandwidth bottleneck on Stardock's end, and we were just finally lucky enough to get through (doubtful, but worth thinking about?). Keep us posted, because I, too am curious as to why it didn't work initially.

I'm NAT'ing on a FreeBSD firewall, and my score showed up, so I don't think it's that either.

Heys guys, i understand everyone's concerns about updating to metaverse (incidentally i have not managed it so far), but aren't we missing an important point.

Beginning of the thread, brad mentioned a new galciv update with some tweaks. There has been no questions about the tweaks(what they are?) by anyone in this thread or an elaboration on it by brad.

I for one would very much like to know what those tweaks are?

Brad pls elaborate. the suspense is just killing me ;)

i asked a question about the tweaks. but got no response.

so i'm gonna ask again...what's in the new .exe?

cheers

I second the question. What is in the new .exe. Played with it for 5 hours, but didn't run across any differences.

Thank you Rusty Blade.

Brad, has made the biggest fan in me. I would gladly write 100 events for free. Essentially, you could just go in sequence of every trek episode and take something from it. Tantalus device installed on a captains ship to Harry Mudd and his android world. Just change the names and stuff to avoid copyright infringement.

Now here is what I really want though. The ability once the event is triggered and the answer given, to have a follow up event occur randomly afterwards. If for instance you do the "good thing" and let the water creatures live on your planet in harmony, well maybe nothing comes of it. On the other hand, what if on the 12th turn you get a new pop up saying they want to marry your son to their queen. If you say yes, perhaps you get +100M citizens when they reveal their hidden city to you, or perhaps he gets eaten because you set up nets for them. It would be a branching storyline.

Thats all I need!

The new AI seems to be kicking my heiney, but they did stop when they could have crushed me utterly and offer peace. They are Chaotic Good and I didn't attack them after the war broke out. (It was due to attacking an ally of theirs). I cranked up espionage and destablization on them, because my economy suddenly tanked and I was hoping perhaps they would feel the crunch. I guess they did.

Brilliant game. This is an all time classic. I know a lot of people say stuff like that, but I've been playing almost every strategy game since Sid Meir's Pirates! back in 1989. This has to be right up there.

New in the EXE:

1) Slightly smarter AI
2) Game plays better than before when multimedia isn't installed (i.e. we use more still images so the game isn't so incomplete looking if you don't have multimedia in)
3) Some performance tweaks so that later games aren't as slow on low end hardware.
4) Fixed crash bug with minor races in diplomacy.

Jae Kaenash, I really like your idea of followup events. Like cohesive subplots within the plot. I do not know how difficult it would be to implement it, but would definitely enhance the game even more.

Plot lines? Like in Castles? That was very cool!

When you say re-register your player, what do you mean? Register again ? Nicks have to be unique, so you have to change that, right?

I'm just looking to become a member of this fine place. And I'm rather proud of my first ever game, being a complete newbie, and managing to get not to embarassing for a first time...

What exactly is meant by "multimedia"? I read somewhere else that there is multimedia downloads...I bought the retail version from EB...does it already come with that multimedia?

Thanks

p.s. I would really like to see the branching storylines also....would be real cool

oh, one more thing...frogboy, i think you are Brad, the lead designer....(i think)....well, I have personally NEVER seen this type of support for a game....EVER....thanks for the hard work to you, and the rest of your crew...

I mean re-submit your Nickname and Serial # on http://www.galciv.com/playerreg.asp. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING. Re-submitting seemed to eventually fix my problem (although it may have just been a coincidence). Worth a try though!

Sorry, I should a little more careful with word choice: Re-REGISTER your player on that screen. Then re-SUBMIT your score to the Metavers.

FWIW, I'm on a Win98SE box and have yet to have a metaverse post. I haven't tried the new DLL and exe, but will give it go shortly.

The new dll does work for me. The game doesn't crash when submitting and the score shows up. Thanks a lot!
Good luck moving!

Yes, it's actually quite easy to modify the existing files, or to create new ones, although I have run into a snag with my "Enhanced Terraforming" addon that I'm currently working on, but I won't go into that here.
It seems that the list of metaverse games keeps on growing. Obviously some players are capable of submitting, I wish I knew what magic they were using to cause this to be possible. :(

Is there any explanation of the cause of these (many) submissions not going through? I would like to know if there is anything else I can do on my end to increase my chances. I have already tried:

~ New .dll and files
~ Countless reregistrations
~ Countless restarts of the GalCiv program
~ Disableing ad-blocking software and virus programs
~ Restarting computer
~ Prayer (I'll understand if tech-support cannot cover this)
