Dan Rather Bashes Katie Couric

I read recently in the White House Project there was an article in the NY Post that Dan Rather disparage Katie Couric’s anchoring of the CBS News. He said that since Katie Couric took over his old job, “…I think it has become even clearer that the mistake was to try to bring the ‘Today’ ethos to the evening news and to dumb it down, tart it up, in hopes of attracting a younger audience.”

The NY Post article also mentioned that he, Rather, has now joined “joined the growing contingent who is not watching the woman who replaced him”.

I read this and I said to myself, a ‘growing contingent”? What the fuck does that mean? Does that mean that there are a group of people out there who have decided that they will not watch that particular news program because a woman is the News Anchor? Or does that mean the loyal followers of Dan Rather refuse to watch in protest over him not being there anymore?

So are they not giving Ms. Couric a chance because they are angry about Rather or are they just being sexist in their decisions to not watch her show?

Let’s face it, women have always had a hard time proving themselves in our society and still do. As independent and as liberal and free (everything that ‘free’ stands for) as our country is, women have always had to prove themselves whenever they deem to ‘go up’ against the established male counterparts in our society.

Katie Couric has always been successful at what she does. She has always been popular and her rise to Anchor(hood) was celebrated by many people, especially women and young girls who one day dream to do what she is doing. We all knew it would be a monumental task for her because of the preconceived expectation that goes along with a position such as being an Anchor and the ratings war that ensues between the television networks.

It’s quite obvious how entertainment-geared a lot of these news broadcasts have become and she has to fit into that mold as well, a mold that no doubt is being dictated by the network brasses, which are if not all, male.

They put her in that position to capitalize on her popularity, and her looks and hopefully the younger audience, 18-45 would join her to watch and listen to her report the news of the day. Now that the program seems to be failing because the ratings have dropped substantially, it’s all her fault! Gee, I’m not surprise that they would blame her!

As for Dan Rather, his remark is sexist and filled with sour grapes and he owes her and all women an apology!

I just find it amusing to watch Dan criticize CBS over letting the presentation trump the facts after his "fake but accurate" memos. Kettle, this is Pot. Black. I say again, black. Over.

I am no fan of Katie or Dan Rather.  But I must lodge a small protest here.  Dan's comments, taken in context, were not directed at Katie Couric (although they did disparage her), but at Les Moonvenes.  He was accusing Les of "tarting up" and "dumbing down" the news cast.  Of course to make the point, he had to basically insinuate (but not state) that katie Couric was nothing more than a pretty face with the IQ of mush.

And for all that, I just chuckle.  I find a grain of truth to what he says (and coming from a more reputable person with no perceived bias, may even have legitimacy), but find that the "messenger" in this case is the source of the problem.  For not only does he try to trash Moonvenes, and in so doing, Couric, he states Moonvenes: "Does not know about News".

That statement may also be true, but that would be like a forger lecturing us on Ethics.  For we now know, with no doubt as it is documented, that Dan Rather knows a lot about Editorials, falsifying data, and obscuring facts to bend the reported news to a pre-arrived at conclusion.  But he apparently knows nothing about the NEWS business.  News is not editorials. Or lies, or Fraud, or Forgery.

But then I would not expect Dan Rather to know that.

That's beautful and expensive melon mush brain to you Elie! I really do think she's a talented person and wouldn't have gotten as far as she did if she wasn't. She's by no means my fav tv personality but she does deserve some credit for getting as far as she as.
