Glad I Went To The Doctor Today

I went and saw a doctor today about my trying to quit smoking and my depression. I'm really glad that I did. He was a very nice guy who seemed to truly understand the situation.

He told me that it was very common for people with clinical depression to self medicate with cigarettes to temporarily correct the chemical imbalance that causes the depression and he wasn't at all surprised that I was a heavy smoker. He said some of the chemicals in cigarette smoke acted as anti-depressants.

He spent some time talking with me and didn't make me feel like he was just trying to rush through yet another patient. I appreciated that. He said that he felt that Wellbutrin might be the right thing for me as it is an anti-depressant as well as effective in smoking cessation. He gave me a two weeks supply of samples as well as a prescription. He said to try the samples for two weeks and see if they seem effective for the depression and then fill the script if they are.

He also said something that I never thought I would hear a doctor say. He told me to not stop smoking for now. He said to wait the two weeks to allow the drug to start taking effect and controlling my depression and then if it seems to be working I can quit smoking.

He also told me that if it isn't helping at the end of two weeks to call him and he will call in a script for Chantrix and some other anti-depressant. Either way he wants to see me again in 3 or 4 weeks.

Now I feel like there might be some hope both in getting out of this depression and in quitting smoking for good. I'm really glad I decided to go and see him.

Mason this was in today's paper in the UK, it might be of interest to you in your bid to quit smoking? (the American equivalent?)

An anti-smoking "wonder pill" which is twice as effective as other treatments, looks likely to be made available on the National Health Service.

Tests showed that nearly half of patients who took Champix gave up smoking within three months.

It was also twice as effective as those on nicotine replacement therapy. Trials on 2,000 people found that after a year, 22 per cent had still not started smoking again.

The twice-daily pill, also known as varenicline tartrate

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Jen. The same drug here is called Chantrix. I don't know why they chose to market it under a different name in Europe.

If the Wellbutrin doesn't work, that's the next one the doc will try.

Sounds like a doctor that listens to his patients!

Good luck with it.

Yeah, it's hard to find one that actually bothers to listen.

Thanks.

Wellbutrin is a good anti depressant unless you have any kind of anxiety/are high strung.  Then it can make them much worse.  My aunt had a serious melt down on a trip to Europe while on them.

Never heard of anti depresants helping someone quit smoking.

Hmmmmm.

I am certainly not high strung I'm one of the most easy going folks you're likely to ever run across.

Wellbutrin is well know as a smoking cessation aid as it quells the cravings and the stress they create. As a stop smoking aid it's marketed under the name Zyban. It's the exact same drug. They had to rename it for smoking cessation as opposed to treatment for depression because of the stupid insurance companies. Some will not cover mental health drugs but will cover smoking cessation drugs and visa versa. Insurance companies are insane.

I definitely wish you all the best at lickin' both problems (the depression and the smoking).

Just remember you are stronger than both, even if you need a little help (whatever prescription works for you), and you should be able to get through it all just fine.

Thanks. I'm sure I'll do just fine now that I got over my natural tendency towards hard-headedness

While I'm not exactly rooting for ya (the Australian connotation is very, very different to the American one ) I do hope it all works out for you.
