Usless planets, star bases, and star level.

Blah.

I have noticed that there are completely USLESS planets (actually, the bigger asteriods that you can colonize). What I mean by that is that they have no "resource" asteriods around them (metal or crystal) and they provide 0.00 income a second. Sometime I think about whether or not I should bother colonizing this...this...thing. Maybe (if possible) the devs should prevent the game from creating these monstrosities.

One thing that disturbes me in this game is that if my capitol planet is next to the star and I send my fleet(s) somewhere else, my home planet is at a severe risk. Thats why I prepose putting star bases in the game (although it could be a little late for this). Maybe you and your allies could all have bases there (bigger gravity well, why not share the wealth? ). Since its a star maybe bigger stations that have fighters and produce ships and are some kind of "advanced researched station".

Also, I noticed that stars have "levels", but only level 1 is in the game. I was just wondering what the levels could do and if there are going to be more(level 1, if I remember right, increases the rate at which AM is restored).

Blah.

Nice subtitle, simple, yet profound.

I am actually shocked at the lack of traditional starbases in the game, yeah broadcast centres and factories blah de blah...but these are orbital facilities. There should be deep space facilities (ie Starbases) capable of spreading influence, manufacturing ships and defending itself in combat.

Level 1 may be a small main sequence G-type star (a la our Sun) and higher levels maybe larger stars (Red Giant, Blue Supergiant etc) around which AM may be restored at a phenomenal rate.

The useless asteroids you're referring too are deliberately in the game, as they are called Dead Asteroids. As for colonizing them, there isn't much point, except that it lets you build around them, they'd be useful as choke points. Although, bringing in a colony frigate and sending pods down seems a little overdone for a non-existent colony.

actually I find that dead asteroids are placed at extremely important choke points, often it makes sense to either not colonize them, or colonize with the intent to build defensive structures.
Either way it allows you to launch important defensive battles without fear for the loss of infrastructure (or you could just decoy one of them with hundreds of phasespace disrupters and trap your enemy forever... muhahahhahahaha.)

Are you playing with extremely few planets per system? I've never had a system generated where the homeworlds were less than two hops from the star, and they're usually three or more hops away.

As noted by others, the Dead Asteroids are specifically marked as such and are there for the strategic value, even if they're economically useless.

in fact, as i posted in another thread, i like the idea of useless planets, asteroids etc. not every bit of a star system has to be coloniseable and the could - if gravity wells were enlarged especially with gas giants - be put to tactical use. this has to balance with gameplay of course, but it could for example result in more solar systems being the rule in games, which i would also like.

ad starbases: well, lets think of the roles they could fill

- defensive structure
- building capacity
- sensor range
- refuel and repair station

seems like there would be some reasons for putting them in, so an idea that warrants further exploration.

And an idea that has had further explanation in other threads.

I wouldn't mind seeing uncolonizable gas giants in the game, but I've no idea on if that's on the drawing board or not.
