Making Widescreen Wallpapers

So the problem is quite simple. How can I turn a great looking Wallpaper, made for a normal NON-widescreen display, into a beautiful display fit for any screen. I tried to make one of my 1600x1200 wallpapers into a widescreen size, but obviously it came out stretched. So ive been thinking. Theoreticly, i could just make the backgroudn continue on in widescreen, then keept he image and main focus of the wallpaper in the center(unchanged). Sounds doable... but i cant see how. If that is what widescreeners are looking for plz say aye, because i have no idea.

We have been pitching the wide-screen thing around too but in reverse. From what I have noticed with some of them if the subject is centered so that cropping doesn't effect the original content idea to much then there would be no resizing the wall width allowing no chance of distortion.If the renderer would give it a high resolution that would help. I have used a cloning tool to widen a wall or piece one together.
