26 jan 2004 – a bristol university student is auctioning off her virginity on the internet. rosie reid decided to offer her virginity so she does not leave university with huge debts.
the 18-year-old lesbian, who started a bachelor of science degree in social policy at the university of bristol three months ago, said she was prepared to have sex with a stranger rather than face years of hardship.
rosie said she has received the support of her parents and girlfriend jess cameron, aged 26, an operations manager. she said her parents were "quite amused" when they found out about her plan.
rosie works three shifts a week as a waitress. she often does 12-hour shifts, which means sacrificing lectures to make £4.50 an hour.
she said: "the government has made it difficult for people like me to follow their ambition to study." her partner jess said: "i feel angry that rosie has to be in this position at all."

rosie, aged 18, a first-year social policy student, has said she will meet all of the bidders before selecting one.
she has been offered £8,400 by a 44-year-old businessman, with the second highest bid being £8,000 offered by a 39-year-old london-based professional.
an american who earlier bid £10,000 is understood to have withdrawn the offer.
miss reid placed her advert on auction website ebay, although the site later removed it and she was forced to continue the auction on her own website.
... sometimes, i try to imagine how somebody must feel in those moments before they commit suicide ... it may be one thing to contemplate a permanent solution to a temporary problem, but it is another thing entirely to carry the action out.
this young woman had some two weeks in which to occupy the space between intention and action ... to think about what it was she was actually selling. in my eyes, that gives her no excuse ... or does it ?
how much would somebody have to pay you to be unfaithful ... not only to your partner, but to your sexuality and to yourself as well ? ... how much is your dignity worth ?

the student received hundreds of bids from around the world after putting her virginity up for sale, first on ebay and then on her own website.
it is understood the highest bidder was a bt engineer from south london.
miss reid, a lesbian from dulwich, south london, said she "sobbed" after sleeping with the man.
