i'm a lesbian virgin

blah ! take THAT for a title ... ;)

26 jan 2004 – “a bristol university student is auctioning off her virginity on the internet”

(all text in italics is from the site: Link)

this girl has a partner. a 26 year old female sexual partner. is she a virgin ? ... has she never been penetrated ? ... never had sex resulting in orgasm ? ... no dildos ? ... not even a teeny, little, weenie one ? ...

does “virgin” imply then, that if one has not had sex with both sexes, then one is technically still a “virgin” to one sex ?.

so by that same token, am i myself still a virgin because i have not had sex with a woman ?.

so, what did that guy really pay for ? ... can i auction my “lesbian viginity” on ebay for a cool ten thousand pounds ? ... think the fact that i’m married may mean nobody will believe me ? ... hey, they believed HER, didn’t they ? ... seems just as likely to me ...

26 jan 2004 – a bristol university student is auctioning off her virginity on the internet. rosie reid decided to offer her virginity so she does not leave university with huge debts.

the 18-year-old lesbian, who started a bachelor of science degree in social policy at the university of bristol three months ago, said she was prepared to have sex with a stranger rather than face years of hardship.

rosie said she has received the support of her parents and girlfriend jess cameron, aged 26, an operations manager. she said her parents were "quite amused" when they found out about her plan.

rosie works three shifts a week as a waitress. she often does 12-hour shifts, which means sacrificing lectures to make £4.50 an hour.

she said: "the government has made it difficult for people like me to follow their ambition to study." her partner jess said: "i feel angry that rosie has to be in this position at all."

... is everything for sale in this world ? ... and if the girl wasn’t prepared to pay the fees, why did she take the course to begin with ?

and how can (british pm) tony blairs’ son afford to study at the same university ?

and what of the four hundred men that placed bids, reportedly up to £10,000 ?...

... how many of them were for real ... how many of them actually thought about what is was they were trying to “buy” ? ... and why were there so damned many of them ? ...

26 february 2004 - bristol university student rosie reid, who auctioned her virginity on the internet, is in the process of choosing the winner from a shortlist of five bidders.

rosie, aged 18, a first-year social policy student, has said she will meet all of the bidders before selecting one.

she has been offered £8,400 by a 44-year-old businessman, with the second highest bid being £8,000 offered by a 39-year-old london-based professional.

an american who earlier bid £10,000 is understood to have withdrawn the offer.

miss reid placed her advert on auction website ebay, although the site later removed it and she was forced to continue the auction on her own website.

... sometimes, i try to imagine how somebody must feel in those moments before they commit suicide ... it may be one thing to contemplate a permanent solution to a temporary problem, but it is another thing entirely to carry the action out.

this young woman had some two weeks in which to occupy the space between intention and action ... to think about what it was she was actually selling. in my eyes, that gives her no excuse ... or does it ?

how much would somebody have to pay you to be unfaithful ... not only to your partner, but to your sexuality and to yourself as well ? ... how much is your dignity worth ?

does every hooker that sells it on the street corner for "change" deserve some type of compensation now because life is so fucking hard for a british doctors’ daughter to pay her way through non-essential study ?

22 march 2004 - a bristol student who auctioned her virginity on the internet has admitted having sex with a man for £8,400. rosie reid, aged 18, met the five top bidders last month and finally chose the 44-year-old after assessing their suitability.

the student received hundreds of bids from around the world after putting her virginity up for sale, first on ebay and then on her own website.

it is understood the highest bidder was a bt engineer from south london.

miss reid, a lesbian from dulwich, south london, said she "sobbed" after sleeping with the man.

she told the news of the world: "it was horrible. i hate the way men kiss”.

"it felt very uncomfortable but it was over quite quickly i suppose."

... i’ve been waiting for the “hoax” report ... someone please tell me there is one, because this is rape ... of the very worst kind. this has so many horrible connotations that i barely know where to begin.

that man ... is he really a man ? ... at 44, one could assume he’s fully conversant in the ways of the world.

one may even assume his upbringing (unfortunate or not) to have caused some type of sexual aberration that could allow him to take pleasure in such a multiple violation ... but an engineer ? ... from south london ? ... fuck him. he can afford therapy. and he fucking needs it.

what can have driven him ? ... fantasy alone may have triggered it ... but to actually go ahead and fuck a woman whom you believe to be both a lesbian and a virgin ... and who also happens to be desperate for money, crying, and 26 years your junior ... and to actually manage to perform ...

and her. her statement: “i hate the way men kiss” ... men. multiple. inferring previous sexual contact on at least some level with a male. and then a female. and then another male ...

... is this a confused little girl ?

(other burning questions to follow ... is moon really made of cheese ? is george bush just a little bit of a silly moo-moo sometimes ?)

what did that really cost everyone involved ?

was it the governments’ shame over a students’ very public and creative method of paying for her education ?

or the unbearable consequences on a young woman too desperate and too young to have been making such a choice ?

and that so-called man that crossed a line that should never have allowed to have been drawn to begin with ... i’m glad it was all over for him in a few schoolboyish squirts ...

... "it felt very uncomfortable but it was over quite quickly i suppose." (rosie reid)

... as if it could ever be over.

i'm of the opinion that virginity is event/location-related such that since i've never engaged in any sexual behavior in, say, kuala lumpur, my kuala lumpurian virginity is still fully intact. further, should i ever visit kuala lumpur, upon my arrival in that exotic land there will exist a considerable catalog of potential deflorations.

beyond that, what exactly is a bt engineer?

You asked such great questions and made such excellent points about this.

kingbee, i agree with your extension of my theory most wholeheartedly .

in fact, i further propose that if one is not occupying the actual same spot where coitus has occured on a previous occasion, and one is not enjoying the company of the same person with whom one has had said coitus at said spot, one may for all intents and purposes be declared a virgin.

ie: we are all virgins.

on the moon.

and wisefawn ... that girls' story just got under my skin so badly ! ... thankyou for your comments once again, they're very welcome

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Prostitution is illegal in the UK, right?  Seems to fit quite nicely in that category.  I'm shocked that the parents thought it was funny!  yea...ha.  ha.  too funny...no.

Nice article mig!

thankyou shades ... dare i say this is a "shady" area in so many ways ? ... (bad pun ... i know)

when i heard this girls' story, i got so angry that my blog didn't even cover half of the ground that it might have. i felt like i could go on forever !.

and your point is a very good one regarding the legalities of what occured ... if this is not illegal, it should be.

some "doors" should just never be opened.

Ack!

I agree with shades there... just what were this girls parent's thinking, in allowing her to go to such lengths to pay for uni.

Whether lesbian or not, one's virginity (to me) is a sacred thing. Perhaps later in this girls life, the emotional scars of this episode will begin to surface.

To the engineer, she was just a "trophy" ....sad that, really really sad. Foolish little girl.

Wreckless.

indeed, eric ... there is SO much wrong with this that it's hard to know where to start.

she apparently even had the blessing of her "partner", a woman 8 years her senior ... doesn't sound like much of a supportive relationship to me.

as you say ... very foolish girl. very, very sad story.

Nice article Mig...

It's wierd that she got so much for it... The more a female is willing to sell their integrity, the less I would pay.

BAM!!!

Funny, I think women with integrity probably won't be selling it anyway

hah ! ... i think shades has you there, muggaz lovely ! ..

but seriously, i know what you mean, mark. some things should never be for sale, particularly one's integrity, right ? ...

I think that this is simply prostitution.  The next thing we should hear of is both of them being arrested for it.  I thought that it was a hoax when I first heard about it.  Even then they were trying to figure out what to do about it.  Something *should* happen to them.  I would hate to think that this type of behavior will become common place among all the college kiddies needing cash.

I'm all for it!

And, I agree with Karma--there has to be a law that was broken, and if not, I'm lobbying for one!

Well now!!!

This thread seems important for a lot of reasons. It suggests, albeit perhaps unwillingly and unwittingly, the central importance of human sexual energy and human sexual need. It demonstrates, though no one has admitted it perhaps, the overwhelming predominance of the capitalist marketplace---where anything is for sale 'if the price is right.' And it shows the prevalence of 'spectacular' relationships, especially in relation to the mass media.

Inquiring minds want to know. What do folks think of strippers? What about strippers who do lap dances? What about the thousands---more likely tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands each year---who sell kidneys, corneas, and other body parts in order to get money to live? What about the Chinese government, that executes hundreds of thousands of people each year and then puts their organs on the auction block? Does the orphan market set you off, if not the organ market?

I agree with the young woman's parents. She is a smart and powerful girl. The men, however, who would pay fifteen grand to have sex with a 'virgin,' I can't help but feel pity at their buy-in to a complete sham of human sexuality, on the one hand, and disgust at their egotism---I can show her what real sex is like, how great a real man is---on the other.

The sense of judgement and anger in other threads saddens me. We might as well be judgemental and angry that an unequal marriage, that we agreed to in the first place, all of a sudden feels unfair and constricting. What was that movie with Robert Redford and what's her name, Bruce's ex? I hated it, but not because it glorified prostitution and the marketing of integrity, but because it was false and boring. This callow Brit's sense of theater guarantees this will not be boring, and as with all great theater, the greatness comes from the way the producer of the event ties what is real with what is made-up.

Great post. Thanks for bringing this to light for the Yanks here.

my first reaction to this was to take it a bit less than seriously. i kept wondering why you found it so distressing so when i saw the title again i decided to take another look.

ive been close to more than a few women whose sexual histories are similar in that each of them began sleeping with guys at about 15 motivated by a determination not to lose another boyfriend or to feel more popular/accepted.. ive also been close to an almost equal number of women who were molested by relatives or family friends at around the same age or perhaps a year or two younger. both groups are victims as far as im concerned. combined they represent more than half the women i know well. as much as i hate to think of the implications, id be more surprised to learn its all some sorta statistical anomaly than to find out it isnt. either way, its likely the same thing is going on even as we commisserate about rosie. those girls will have less control of their situations because of their ages and less experience on which to draw. its all sad but the saddest thing about rosie reid is her seeming inability to see other options.

Have you ever read "Memoirs of a Geisha"? They have been auctioning virginity forever in Japan

and that her parents and partner were blind to this as well.

I can't help but remember the immutable rule of self autonomy and self sovereignty. We sell ourselves and our precious lives to jobs we do not want or need. We barter our integrity on a daily basis for less than the opportunity to educate ourselves.

We can do this because our lives are our own to sell.

We live with the consequences of our choices day in and day out - so will she, so will the man that bought into a delusion and a moment of pathetic pride. Pride that he could buy the time and flesh of another human being because of his economic superiority over his victim and over the other men he bidded against.

The pride he must have felt when he was deemed the most "suitable".

The deflation after his expenditure, in that moment of "honesty" after his "boyish squirts".

The media just facillitates in the process of accounting for our actions and transactions, like vultures and hyenas facillitate the restoration of balance. The enzymes that clear away the corpses.

If a law should infringe upon our rights to sell our bodies and soul, no one would ever be allowed to work again. Who is to say that sex is worth more than a third of the prime of our lives. But like i said it's our choice. Just like it was hers.

Mig. You surprised me on this one. Not because i disagree. In a lot of ways i don't. It was an extension of your abilities i wasn't expecting.

You never cease to surprise me.

i just woke up. hehe. yes, i know it's midday in australia.

the responses to this article have had a two-fold benefit to me.

firstly, they have strengthened my beliefs that this is just plain WRONG !. this is such a permissive world ... anything goes ... it is such a relief to know that i'm no "dinosaur" when it comes to values.

secondly, they have given me much food for thought at the same time.

karma, you're absolutely right. i don't know why there hasn't been a criminal investigation. there should be.

jimbo, i agree. this is a total sham of human sexuality. it makes me shidder to imagine what is next ?.

kingbee, i'm glad you re-read this. i liked both of your takes on this ... the first one gave me smile when i really needed it .. and the second one was just as important in another way .

joe, i have read (arthur goldens') "memoirs of a geisha". and i agree ... although no money changes hands in the book, the undercurrent of "purity" being the only think of value to a male is very simliar. good point. thankyou !

and nigkyg ... the co-operation of this girls' parents and partner amazed me too. makes you wonder how much love she had in her life to make her put a price on herself in such a way ?

and marco (aka notsohighlyeveolved) ... SURPRISE !!!!. non-fiction.

thankyou all so, so much.

I've heard of similar things happening before. This just got a lot of publicity because of the eBay angle. How many college girls become strippers to pay admission? How many perform "favors" for their professors for good grades. And most people don't care. If you say anything about such things you're shouted down as trying to "force your morality" on other people. While their at it they'll take the opportunity to start spouting every bigoted thing they can think of regarding religion. *shakes head*
