carriers truth or fiction?

Hi all

the part of this game i am really looking forward to is the use of carrier type ships
from what ive seen my understanding is that you will have some battleships with upgrades to allow complements of fighters, bombers etc

but will there be an out and out carrier ship, ie no heavy arments but with some anti missile/fighter defence and of course a large ammount of fighters etc,

also to clarify i think i read somewhere that there is a cap on the number of fighters that will be allowing in a battle, can anyone verify the numbers ?

(fingers crossed for huge swarms of ships)

thanks

Things can change in alpha/beta

There will be carriers. And the only cap af fighters, is the base/carrier cap.

Heres an outdated Advent carrier. But it will give you an idea of what to expect.

As far as a ship cap goes it hasn't been said there will( atleast to my knowledge) from what I understand based on what Schematicsninja says, is that there will be a soft cap ie the line where the ships operations cost crossess with the your empires support abilities( does your empire have enough gold to support the number of ships you have/are creating).

Yup, and it seems that all of the ships you own will be able to participate in a single battle at the same time, So no "reinforcements" or anything.

Truth!!

You know over the past few days I have been thinking about changing my screen name to that. Much more fitting, and creative.

Anyways, I wont bother with this thread. The question has been answered at least thrice by now.

Hmm has a certain snap to it lol... Of course now that you've come up with it I can't use it.

So far everything I've thought of turned out to be cliched allusions to popular culture or downright stupid... I hope that doesn't reflect too badly on me.

Carriers will be seriously hamstrung if the tactical maps are too small. Having battles start nose to nose will mean a quick death for carriers that face off against cruiser/battleship fleets. They might not even get all of their fighters out before they die if the battles start at point blank.

Thats why a smart general will keep his carriers behind his fleet. And I am sure there will be plenty of space for anything.

I dont think map size is going to be an issue
*looks sideways at SotS*

no, map size won't be to much of a problem, but the problem remains if the radius is to small. Having the carriers on your frontlines is not a good trategy.

It really all depends on your tactics (i.e. hit and run for instance) and what the loadout of the carriers are. For example, if I were to have a couple Mercury class Battlestars, each capable of taking on 5 baseships at once....I wouldn't mind having my carriers on the frontlines.

Were I to have WWII aircraft carriers, obviously they would need quite a support mechanism and be flanked on all sides by destroyers, cruisers and the like.

It's all relative really.

I assume that it's possible, this being an RTS 4x game, that you can send in a carrier or scout and then upon an enemy taking the bait, jump in ships behind or to the sides of your enemy once battle has commenced?

That would be very difficult, as it takes some time to travel through phase space.

what about detection of fleets behind planets? will it be possible to "hide" a fleet and havew some ships as bait then spring the hidden ships on them?
