Maybe they contribute to research output, notice the artifact symbols also scattered through the tree, they appeared to be placed a bottleneck points of the tree and it indicates that you need to mine another resource/artifact to unlock it.

I was going to post on this, but you have beat me to it. The screens seem to support the importance of the artifacts and statements that they give VPs, it also shows that my theory of alien tech being hte reason for hte artifacts, may not be correct. It is possbile however that the 4th tier tech tree may also be another reason for the artifacts, but I have nothing other then speculation to support this.

ok now I understand the basic rundown

dots in a circle->local forces
crowny things->indicater of who owns what
orange triangles->artifacts.

are you still able to get close to stars? (i.e. fight around them) and if you can, whats the motive for doing such (other than faster AM regen)
additionally this brings up a good point, does sitting in the umbra/penumbra of a planet slow your AM regen?

Good guesses ninja Yes you can move to and fight around stars. There a number of reasons to bother but I can't give you them all. One is as you said though, antimatter regenerates very fast around a star.

schem read my mind and posted that theory as his own...

anyway that is awesome, its like the ships all have solar panels lol...

It would make sense. The antimatter is just for lots of power quickly, while the solar panels regenerate the antimatter reserves.
